Governor Whitmer Fails To Approve the Muskegon Casino Project

submitted by the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians

The following is a statement by Larry Romanelli, Ogema of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians in response to the announcement by Governor Whitmer that she will not approve the Tribes $200 million casino project in Fruitport Township in Muskegon County.

“Our Tribal members are absolutely devastated that Governor Whitmer has decided to not approve our casino development in Fruitport Township. This project would have created and supported 3,000 jobs for Tribal members and families in the community along with providing funds for healthcare and housing. Our tribe has worked hand-in-hand with the Muskegon Community for the past twelve years to gain approval from the Federal Government and State Government. Words cannot express how thankful we are for our community’s support and the disappointment we feel for them. Our tribe is proud that over the last 12 years, we did everything right. The project has been supported by the Obama, Trump and Biden Presidential administrations along with the Granholm and Snyder Gubernatorial administrations. We received approvals from the Department of Interior and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. We met all the criteria required for approval. And while we disagree completely with Governor Whitmer’s decision, we respect that she has the authority to make it. For now, The Muskegon Casino Project has concluded.”

Grand Opening of Lake Bluff Grille Restaurant at Muskegon Country Club on June 15

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – RedWater purchased Muskegon Country Club (located at 2801Lakeshore Drive in Muskegon) in summer 2021 and has been working hard on renovations for a new public restaurant and updated event venue at its facilities. RedWater is excited to announce that the grand opening of Lake Bluff Grille restaurant will be June 15, 2022, upon completion of its expansive, covered deck.

In order to improve the dining experience at Muskegon Country Club for both its golf club members and guests, RedWater has made major renovations to the facility including relocating the placement of the restaurant within the building to offer generous space for diners, building a large wrap-around bar at the center of the restaurant, adding a feature wine wall with wine locker storage for guests, and expanding and covering the deck for extended access to outdoor dining. The new restaurant will have a modern and contemporary interior design with an inviting and warm feel. RedWater Chief Operating Officer Craig Smith said, “Muskegon Country Club has been a staple of Muskegon and the surrounding community since 1908, so it was very important to us to research and develop a design and restaurant concept that appeals to the Muskegon community, visitors to the area, and our current members of Muskegon Country Club. We are extremely excited to invite diners to see our brand-new restaurant that will be open to the public starting on June 15, following a ribbon cutting with the Muskegon Chamber of Commerce.”

The new restaurant is named after its location on the bluff overlooking Muskegon Lake. Both the new Lake Bluff Grille and renovated Muskegon Country Club event venue will have outstanding views of the golf course and views of Muskegon Lake from an expansive covered deck. RedWater Director of Marketing Leanne Stoll said, “Lake Bluff Grille will transform the dining experience at Muskegon Country Club by celebrating the beautiful waterfront scenery and the deliciousness of contemporary American fare. With brilliant views of Muskegon Lake and the endless green of our golf course, we hope that Lake Bluff Grille will bring new life and new flavors to the historic Muskegon Country Club.” Lake Bluff Grille will be featuring live music every Thursday and Friday evening during the summer to add to the relaxing, yet upbeat vibes of the patio setting.

The menu at Lake Bluff Grille will offer New American style cuisine with a wide range of handcrafted appetizers, sandwiches, and entrees. The menu will also feature a RedWater Restaurants guest-favorite: Entrees that are served on 500-degree fire rocks, adding an interactive element to the dining experience. The signature fire rocks allow guests to cook food to the temperature of their liking while keeping their meals hot and flavorful. RedWater Director of Food and Beverage Darren Rehfeld said, “We are excited to offer a unique dining concept not found anywhere else in Muskegon, combined with an ambiance that is second to none. The unbeatable views of the lake and bluffs from our new deck paired with Lake Bluff Grille’s delicious food and drink offerings are sure to impress.”

In addition to the major restaurant renovations, RedWater has made upgrades to the Muskegon Country Club event venue. The venue will still seat around 150 people indoors, but there will be added space for weddings and other events on the new, covered deck. The deck will also serve as a space to host meetings and small events outside. A new reception courtyard area off the patio will provide even more outdoor space for events.

RedWater will also be growing its Live Golf Studios brand with the addition of golf simulators in the restaurant and event venue area at Muskegon Country Club. The simulators will feature state-of-the-art technology and will offer access to more than 100 golf courses, various challenge games, multiple practice ranges, and arcade games to provide fun for the whole family. LiveGolf Studios will be open to the public during the fall and winter months and the simulators will be available as an add-on service for private events.

RedWater owners and staff are excited to expand their group to the Muskegon community and open the new Lake Bluff Grille restaurant. Smith said, “We are thrilled to grow our group yet again and look forward to bringing more jobs and opportunities to the area. Our well-trained team takes pride in offering great food, service, and a relaxed environment within each of our restaurants.”

Howmet Grant to Grow STEM Curriculum for Muskegon Area Students

Muskegon, MI – The Howmet Aerospace Foundation and Greater Muskegon Economic Development (GMED) are pleased to announce that the Foundation has awarded a $200,000 grant to support new and expanded STEM education for Muskegon area students. Funds will be used to establish The Howmet Center for Sustainable Science and Technology, which will allow Muskegon Community College and Muskegon Area Intermediate School District students to gain greater exposure and access to STEM education using food processing and food science. Programming will include in-class lectures and lab coursework at the new Food, Agriculture, Research, Manufacturing (FARM) food processing business accelerator on the campus of Muskegon Community College. These offerings will integrate with the MSU/MCC food processing degree and certificate programs (https://www.muskegoncc.edu/degrees-and-certificates/areas-of-study/food-processing-technology/).  K-12 programs will be held at several West Michigan schools beginning this spring and fall, 2022.

“Our region’s businesses, especially our manufacturers, continue to struggle to find workers with STEM-related skills, and graduating students who have been exposed to STEM is the way to address this issue long-term,” said GMED Director of Business Development Morgan Carroll. “We need to be creative about how we engage students with STEM, so they understand that these jobs not only pay well, they are interesting and rewarding as well.”

The concept is to build students’ STEM skills by introducing them to the chemistry, engineering and math associated with food processing. Chemistry is the science behind the taste, texture and consistency of food. Engineering and technology are the basis of designing and building food processing equipment and sustainable food production systems. Math is an essential part of food formulas, scaling recipes, and setting up and programming food production lines. The goal is to build a pipeline of STEM talent by sparking students’ interest in how and why things work using food, which creates opportunities for them to move into all types of STEM-related jobs and industries from there.

Amy Heisser, Director of Human Resources for Howmet Aerospace, said this is just the latest example of how the company’s Whitehall operations has been supporting community partnerships for more than seven decades. “This grant continues our long tradition of supporting the community while also investing in the next generation of skilled workers. As a company that relies on the technical expertise of employees, Howmet Aerospace understands the importance of providing students access to STEM education opportunities. Muskegon County is also of particular importance to us because our engines business unit is headquartered here. This is why the company, through the Howmet Aerospace Foundation, supports community-based programs like the FARM accelerator that play a critical role in educating our future workforce.”

The FARM food processing business accelerator is owned by the Community Foundation for Muskegon County and managed by the Michigan State University Product Center.

About Howmet Aerospace Foundation

Franklin Graham’s Easter Message from Ukraine

from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association

franklingraham

Easter Sunday, Franklin Graham reminded viewers of the holiday’s true meaning.
In a special TV program filmed on the streets of Lviv, Ukraine, Graham’s Easter message shared the hope found in Jesus Christ—in both His death and His resurrection.

A Ukrainian choir sang and praised God with profound emotion, and several choir members shared how God has sustained them even in the midst of the devastation that war has brought to their country.

“May we never forget the true meaning of Easter and that is the price that was paid for the redemption of your soul,” said Graham. “This price was paid by God. God loves us and Easter is about God’s love for mankind.” The program aired on Fox News and TBN on Easter Sunday and is currently available to watch at BillyGraham.org/Franklin-Grahams-message-from-Ukraine/.

Telemedicine Abortion Ban Introduced

submitted by Genevieve Marnon, Right to Life of Michigan Legislative Director

Lansing, MI — The Telemedicine Abortion Ban was introduced on May 5th, 2022, in the Michigan House.

Sponsored by Rep. Pamela Hornberger, HB 6069 bans the use of telemedicine for diagnosing pregnancy and prescribing the abortion pill.

The following statement is from Right to Life of Michigan President Barbara Listing:

Telemedicine abortions are a dangerous business. Women are not provided medical screenings to determine gestational age, rule out ectopic pregnancies, or test for RH factor.

The use of telemedicine has increased dramatically over the past two years due to the Covid pandemic. Telemedicine has a place in diagnosing and treating some ailments, but medical abortions should never be prescribed over the internet. The use of Mifepristone, the first of the two-pill abortion regimen is contraindicated for ectopic pregnancies, which occur in 1-2% of all confirmed pregnancies. Performing an ultrasound to determine the location of the unborn baby and to determine the gestational age is a commonsense safety measure that is skipped during telemedicine abortions.

Listing stated:

To complicate matters, the FDA lifted the requirement of in-person dispensing of the abortion pill and now allows for mail-order abortion pills. Telemedicine abortion in combination with mail-order abortion pills opens the door for increased numbers of coerced abortions from abusive relationships or sex traffickers. Mail order pills could make it easier for an abuser to obtain abortion pills through the mail to be unwittingly forced upon his/her victim.

With the U.S. Supreme Court seemingly poised to overrule Roe vs. Wade and send the abortion decision back to the states, Michigan could soon become an abortion-free state. Once that happens, abortion, including chemical abortions would be illegal. Until that happens, we applaud Rep. Hornberger’s continued efforts to protect women from dangerous mail-order abortions and to protect the innocent unborn from death by abortion pills.

Norton Shores Approves Tax Abatement for Local Manufacturer Expansion

Norton Shores, MI – Greater Muskegon Economic Development (GMED) is pleased to announce that the City of Norton Shores has approved a 12-year tax abatement for local manufacturer Seal Bond for their new 200,000 square foot production facility at 1251 East Mt. Garfield Rd. in Norton Shores. Seal Bond produces industrial adhesives, sealants and coatings for a variety of industries, including product assembly, construction, and raised access flooring. The company expects to begin operations at the new location sometime this summer.

Seal Bond President/General Manager Scott Carmichael said all of the company’s approximately 80 employees will move to the new facility. They also anticipate hiring an additional 20 employees over the next two years. “We have experienced significant growth due to the construction boom and our recent entry into new markets. As a result, we now find ourselves shoehorned in our current space,” he said.  “Our new location gives us room to expand, and its proximity to US-31 is also more convenient for our employees, most of whom live in the Muskegon area. We believe this improved accessibility will also make it easier to attract new team members in the future.”

Norton Shores Mayor Gary Nelund added that the Seal Bond abatement was approved with a unanimous vote, and the City is excited to welcome them to the community. “We continue to see interest from businesses looking to relocate or expand because of Norton Shores’ property values and easy access to two major highways. Our city council is receptive to offering tax abatements, one of the few economic development tools still available to local municipalities, especially when we see a company like Seal Bond ready to make a significant investment in our community.”

Seal Bond will initially lease a portion of the new space to another area manufacturer in need of additional production capacity. However, Carmichael explained that the company’s long-term strategy is to occupy the entire space as they experience continued growth down the road. “We applaud Seal Bond for not only taking steps to address their current growth, but also taking into account where they want to be many years from now,” added GMED Director of Business Growth Morgan Carroll. “We hope other area businesses will follow their example and think long-range about their manufacturing capabilities, as well as how they want to be positioned to be able to attract the talent they’ll need to achieve their goals.”

About Seal Bond
Seal Bond manufactures and develops high performance adhesives, sealants and coatings for OEM and construction applications. The Seal Bond team takes great pride in building lasting relationships by providing state-of-the-art technical solutions and exceptional performance.  From environmental safety to technological advancements, Seal Bond products succeed where others have failed. Rep. Huizenga Announcing Support of Small Businesses and Workers

Rep. Huizenga News Conference Announcing Legislation to Bring Muskegon’s Community Health Coverage Model to More Communities – Supporting Small Business and Workers

MUSKEGON, MI ‐ Congressman Bill Huizenga announced the introduction of the Community Multi‐Share Coverage Program Act at a special event on Friday, June 3, 2022, at the office of Access Health in Muskegon. Huizenga’s legislation will fund national replication of Muskegon County’s Access Health Coverage program, considered one of the most innovative and successful approaches to addressing health care access in the nation.

For over two decades, the Access Health plan has locally provided an affordable and robust coverage option for small businesses and their workers unable to access commercial coverage due to cost barriers. Through partnership with Trinity Health Muskegon, the model’s success has enjoyed national recognition as a proven solution to ensure as many people as possible in Muskegon County have access to affordable healthcare.

Today, communities need solutions such as Access Health ‐ a unique and well‐tested model of coverage in Muskegon that the nation can embrace. There is growing interest in its replication, particularly as emergency federal coverage supports implemented during COVID‐19 expire. This legislation will help fund a critical needed expansion and continue to put Muskegon County on the map as a community committed to local innovation and the wellbeing of all residents.

Rep. Huizenga was joined at the news conference and event by community stakeholder attendees, including:

  •  Jack Russell, President of Rolar Industries and Chair of the Muskegon Heights Business Association
  •  Kathy Moore, Director of Public Health Muskegon County
  •  Gary Allore, President, Trinity Health Muskegon
  •  Park Kersman, CEO Lorin Industries
  •  Emily Morgenstern, Marketing Director, Muskegon Area Chamber of Commerce

Other local officials representing Muskegon County government and the City of Muskegon Heights were also in attendance.

Jeff Fortenbacher, Executive Director of Access Health, believes that this is the right time for expanding the multi‐share model approach. “I see so much potential for Access Health as an affordable option for small businesses trying to hire and retain a workforce in today’s tight market” Fortenbacher said. “This is a program that helps reboot local economies, which require a strong and vital small business sector. We hear it all the time – businesses today face massive hiring challenges, which limit their ability to keep regular hours or provide their pre‐COVID service level. The ability to offer coverage like Access Health can be a game changer for these small businesses, their workers, and our communities.”

“Access Health helps small business workers,” Fortenbacher continued. “We can make a difference with a commonsense approach to health coverage that removes financial barriers to economic mobility. Our plan provides a necessary bridge to economic independence for people as they take that first step away from Medicaid and other government support. As our team works in partnership with our members to improve their health, we recognize that economic mobility is a critical element of health.” Established in 1999, Access Health provides affordable community coverage to eligible small businesses and their workers. One of the only community coverage models of its type in the nation, Access Health’s legacy work includes its nationally recognized multi‐share health plan and regional management of Michigan’s State Medical Plan, a previous Medicaid expansion effort.

“For years, people have asked to have Taste go longer, and A Funny After Taste is a great way to answer that call. We love the chance to send people directly to a local restaurant which is what Taste is all about,” said Lisa Kraus, Director of Marketing for Taste of Muskegon. “It’s such an honor to welcome the Japanese delegate. We have been told that they decided to extend their stay in Muskegon to attend the festival and are excited to try a Taste of the best Muskegon has to offer. It’s a great opportunity for cultural exchange.”

New Fight The Blight Campaign Aims To Beautify The Heights On A Grassroots Level

Muskegon Heights, MI: Muskegon Heights is Reaching New Heights. The New Heights 2-year campaign is focusing in 2022 on the effort to fight blight! Beginning May 21, the City of Muskegon Heights, together with its community partners, is presenting a summer-long clean-up campaign entitled, “Beautify the Heights, Help Fight Blight”. This community empowerment-driven clean-up is engaging residents, businesses, community stakeholders, and volunteers to help curb blight and beautify all sections of the city throughout the city’s entire summer. Each cleanup event will be repeated on the 3rd Saturday of the month, having started in May, and continuing until the end of August.

Each month, the campaign will focus on four zones within the city. On May 21, the kick-off event started with utility trailers in each zone.
A growing list of community partners includes, but is not limited to, the City of Muskegon Heights, United Way of Lakeshore, Community Foundation for Muskegon County, Muskegon Heights Business Association, Gaining Unity through Non-Violent Solutions, West Michigan Lake Hawks in Flight Foundation, Inc., Overcoming Barriers Inc., Coalition for Community Development, Mission for Area People, Taking Back Muskegon, LADS Reforestation Project, Shiba Sequoia Forest, Read Muskegon, 10,000 Fearless Muskegon, the Muskegon Heights Neighborhood Association, and more.

Our community partners have designated captains to oversee the operations for each zone and event. The dates for each upcoming event are June 18, July 16, and August 20 from 8 am to 2 pm. The Community Captains are:

  • Michelle Tyson – Taking Back Muskegon;
  • Kaja Thornton-Hunter – US Café/Overcoming Barriers;
  • Contessa Hood – Muskegon Heights Business Association;
  • Julius Muhammad – 10,000 Fearless Muskegon and
  • Calvin Davis – City of Muskegon Heights

Residents are encouraged to participate by cleaning and beautifying their yards; mowing and edging their lawns, and spreading their cleanup attention and efforts throughout their neighborhoods. Because sharing is caring, residents are encouraged to share their lawn equipment, garden tools, and expertise with neighbors who are seniors or may have special needs.

City Manager Troy Bell, “Blight threatens public safety, challenges water infrastructure, impacts road maintenance, lowers property values, and degrades the quality of life for all. We are Reaching New Heights! Our neighborhoods can and will become safer, cleaner, and more beautiful places for all of us to live if we commit to working together! Unity, Focus, and Vision is the Key!”

Go to bit.ly/BeautifyTheHeights2022 for the neighborhood specifics of concern and common meet-up location.

A Thought for Today

But we do not turn around;
We look instead

Ottawa County to Break Ground on New Family Justice Center

rendering
Architect Rendering

Ottawa County officials are set to break ground on the new Family Justice Center with a ceremony on June 9 at 10 a.m. The new 56,000-square-foot facility will bring all of the departments of the 20th Circuit Court’s Family Division under one roof on the West Olive campus. This includes Juvenile Court, Friend of the Court and other related offices to provide coordinated and centralized services to residents.

Date, time and location of groundbreaking ceremony:

  • Thursday, June 9, 10-11 a.m.
  • Ottawa County Fillmore Complex, Parking Lot C

Ottawa County awarded the project as an Integrated Project Delivery agreement with Granger Construction, DLZ Michigan, Steel Supply & Engineering, Allied Mechanical Systems, Buist Electric and Accurate Controls. Including designers, contractors and key subcontractors in early project planning is intended to keep costs on target, incentivize savings and result in a well-designed and thoughtfully-constructed facility.

Facilities studies dating as far back as 2006 had identified inadequacies in the court facilities in West Olive including insufficient courtroom space and acoustics; lack of privacy for clients and attorneys; no separate waiting spaces for victims or witnesses; lack of ADA compliant restrooms; and other shortcomings.

The anticipated completion date of the new Family Justice Center is Spring 2024.

Arbor Circle Celebrates 25 Years

submitted by Onnika Bell, Marketing & Communications Manager, Arbor Circle

This year, Arbor Circle celebrates 25 years of providing mental health, substance use, and family services in the West Michigan community.

This year’s Spring Forward honoree is Arbor Circle founding board member, Neil Kimball. Kimball is a long-time supporter of Arbor Circle as well as a leader in both the business and non-profit sectors. Originally a member of the Child Guidance Clinic Board, Neil joined the Arbor Circle Board when the organization was formed as part of a merger of several agencies in 1996.

“The original goal of the new Arbor Circle was to combine the resources and talents of four smaller non-profits with compatible services into a larger more efficient and effective entity providing a broad range of services. The original four agencies were Family Impact, Mercy Respite Center, Grand Rapids Child Guidance Clinic, and the Advisory Center for Teens. AOS (Alcohol Outpatient Services) joined shortly after the original merger,” said Kimball. “The non-profit world was changing and it was difficult for small non-profits to obtain sufficient funding from grants and donations to provide their services to the people who needed it. I think the merger of these agencies resulted in a very strong and effective organization that is a real force for good in the West Michigan community.”

Kimball’s service as a board member is one example of the hundreds of friends and contributors who have helped fuel Arbor Circle over the last 25 years. “Mental health and recovery services are needed now more than ever and the need continues to grow,” shared Kimball. “Families and children are struggling and Arbor Circle continually strives to find the best ways to help them given the resources available.”

Arbor Circle is proud to partner with members of our local business community and individual supporters in honoring both Neil Kimball as well as the organization’s 25 years of service. The ongoing need for quality, accessible mental health services is significant, and through the support of the West Michigan community the organization looks with hope on the next 25 years.

Social Security’s Most Popular Baby names in Michigan for 2021

See the list at www.socialsecurity.gov

The Social Security Administration announced the most popular baby names in Michigan for 2021. Charlotte and Noah topped the list.

The top five boys and girls names for 2021 in Michigan were:

Boys:
1)   Noah
2)   Oliver
3)   Liam
4)   Henry
5)   Elijah

Girls:
1)  Charlotte
2)   Olivia
3)   Amelia
4)   Ava
5)   Evelyn

The agency announced previously that Olivia and Liam were the most popular baby names in the U.S.  How does Michigan compare to the rest of the country?  Check out Social Security’s website — www.socialsecurity.gov— to see the top national baby names for 2021.

Acting Commissioner Kilolo Kijakazi encourages everyone to enjoy the baby names list and, while online, create a my Social Security account at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccountmy Social Security, born ten years ago this month, is a personalized online account that people can use beginning in their working years and continuing while receiving Social Security benefits.

Over the decade, more than 69 million people have signed up and benefited from the many secure and convenient self-service options.  People who set up their my Social Security account have access to additional personalized services.  They can request a replacement Social Security card online if they meet certain requirements.  If they already receive Social Security benefits, they can start or change direct deposit online, request a replacement SSA-1099, and if they need proof of their benefits, they can print or download a current Benefit Verification Letter from their account.

People not yet receiving benefits can use their online account to get a personalized Social Security Statement, which provides their earnings information as well as estimates of their future benefits.  The portal also includes a retirement estimator and links to information about other online services, such as applications for retirement, disability, and Medicare benefits.

Additional Baby Names Information:

The agency began compiling the baby name list in 1997, with names dating back to 1880.  At the time of a child’s birth, parents supply the name to the agency when applying for a child’s Social Security card, thus making Social Security America’s source for the most popular baby names.

In addition to each state’s top baby names (and names for U.S. territories), Social Security’s website has a list of the 1,000 most popular boys and girls names for 2021.

Little River Stands Ready to Provide 3,000 Jobs to Michigan Workers

Manistee, Mich. — Next Tuesday, May 31, the Stellantis Corporation is expected to announce that they will open their new battery plant in Kokomo, Indiana and not Michigan. While that is heartbreaking news, the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians stands ready to fill the gap by providing 3,000 new jobs in the Muskegon area.

Governor Whitmer has the power to create 1500 construction jobs and 1500 permanent jobs at the Casino with a stroke of her pen. The Casino project was approved by the Federal Government seventeen months ago and is just waiting for the Governor’s concurrence. And unlike the Stellantis battery plant, the jobs and economic development project will not cost the state taxpayers a dime.

“We join the state leaders in their disappointment over the loss of the Stellantis battery plant,” Said Larry Romanelli, Tribal Ogema of the Little River Band. “But we stand ready to super-charge the local economy by supplying 3,000 jobs with full benefits to the state at no costs to the taxpayers of Michigan.”

The final approval for the Casino, to be located in Fruitport Township in Muskegon County – is on the Governor’s desk. The Casino has overwhelming support from the community and is supported by business and labor, Democrats and Republicans, and Federal, state and local governments. The Tribe has been working on the project for the past 12 years.

“With the Governor’s sign-off, we can create 3,000 jobs and the initial work can begin in months,” said Larry Romanelli.

Tribal casino facts:
• Investment of $180 – $200 million dollars
• State Revenues: $15 million per year
• Local Revenues: More than $3 million a year.
• Expected to attract over 1.8 million visitors per year

Agenda:

  1. Welcome and remembrance of those that we have lost to suicide
  2. Updates, grants, trainings & activities
  • With One Voice-Leo Nouhan
  • MDHHS-Dr. Kristen Smith, Lindsay DeCamp
  • The Governor’s Commission for Suicide Prevention-Corbin Standly
  • Speakers
    • Dr. Sallyanne Duncan of the University of Strathclyde. Dr. Duncan along with Dr. Ann Luce of Bournemouth University are the co-creators of Suicide Reporting Toolkit (Suicide Reporting Toolkit). This presentation is about safe messaging and Dr. Duncan is an expert on this very important topic. Those who work doing suicide prevention know that the media’s handling of deaths by suicide can cause concern. We understand that most journalists are actually very reluctant to report on the topic of suicide though often are unaware of the harm that can result when safe messaging guidelines are not used. Safe messaging guidelines are not just for the professional news media.  These guidelines are for those who are posting to social media and other formats that broadcast to a larger audience.  In order to do good suicide prevention we must know these guidelines and help to educate others.
    • Joseph Ojibway will talk about trauma within the indigenous culture here in Michigan. Mr. Ojibway is a psychiatric nurse practitioner. Trauma informed care is crucial to helping to heal.  Trauma and it’s negative health impacts is important in suicide prevention work and is the “upstream” work that we have been hoping for.
  • Comments, announcements and wrap-up

About Dr. Sallyanne Duncan

Dr. Duncan (University of Strathclyde, Scotland). researches media reporting of trauma, death, bereavement, mental health and suicide. Her work focuses on journalistic processes, ethical issues and media representations. She has published several journal articles and book chapters in these areas. Dr. Duncan is the co-creator of the suicidereportingtoolkit.com, an online resource for journalists, journalism educators and students, aimed at encouraging responsible suicide reporting. The toolkit has been recognized as an invaluable tool for suicide prevention by the American Association of Suicidology, the USA’s leading non-profit association dedicated to the promotion of understanding and prevention of suicide and support for those who have been affected by it. It has also been selected as a finalist for Research Project of the Year in the Herald Higher Education Awards 2021.  All of this and so much more.  We are thankful that Dr. Duncan can join us for our next meeting.

Social Security began compiling the baby name list in 1997, with names dating back to 1880.  At the time of a child’s birth, parents supply the name to the agency when applying for a child’s Social Security card, thus making Social Security America’s source for the most popular baby names.

Guests will notice a number of improvements and upgrades, including:

  • Updates to Mad Mouse and Corkscrew with new color palettes.
  • A new dining experience and updated menu at the park’s 50s-themed restaurant, Coasters. The new serving counters and guest seating will elevate service to a higher level of speed and satisfaction.
  • A completely renovated Corner Store, located near the entrance to the park. New flooring, fixtures, store entrance and merchandise will provide guests with enhanced shopping atmosphere as they choose the perfect souvenir as a memento of their visit.

“Our staff is very excited to welcome guests back for our 2022 season,” says Camille Jourden-Mark, Vice President and General Manager. “Our purpose is to make people happy and we’re looking forward to providing another season of fun and lifelong memories for our guests.”

Camp Snoopy, a Peanuts®-themed kids’ area, is ready to welcome campers back to the park. The area features five family rides, including Pigpen’s® Mud Buggies, Peanuts® Trailblazers, Beagle Scout Lookout and Camp Bus. Little thrill seekers can join parents and grandparents on Woodstock Express, a family roller coaster with plenty of ups and downs.

Fan-favorite Funland Farm returns for the 2022 season as well. The interactive area offers a variety of farm animals for guests to meet. Furry friends include goats, alpacas, llamas, chickens and more.

Home to Thunderhawk and Shivering Timbers, Michigan’s Adventure also offers a variety of thrill rides, family rides, and kiddie rides. Thunderhawk is Michigan’s only suspended looping roller coaster, and Shivering Timbers consistently offers maximum airtime to the most adventurous guests. Half Pint Paradise and Beach Party are waiting to thrill young families at WildWater Adventure Water Park. Guests seeking larger thrills will want to visit Funnel of Fear or one of the park’s three wave pools. WildWater Adventure opens June 11.

A Michigan’s Adventure Season Pass is a must for the 2022 season, currently being offered at its lowest price in years. At an online cost of only $79, plus applicable fees, a season pass provides a whole summer of fun. This special pricing is only available online through June 12.

Michigan’s Adventure is exclusively cashless for all transactions. The cashless transactions are safe, quick and will significantly improve the guest experience at dining, retail and point-of-sale spots throughout the park. Guests who bring cash to the park can convert it into a prepaid debit card that can be used anywhere – not just inside the park – with no fees. For more information on the cashless program at Michigan’s Adventure, visit miadventure.com/cashless.
