Dr. Universe: Why did people stop exploring the ocean? I heard they only explored 5% of it. – Dakota, 11, New Mexico

When I think about exploring the ocean, I think about the discovery of giant tube worms. They live in super- hot, mineral-rich water deep in the ocean. They don’t do normal things like eat or poop—but they can live for 300 years or longer. Scientists were shocked when they found them—and there’s probably much more to find.
The worms are long, white tubes with a dark red plume coming out of the end.

These are tube worms that live by underwater volcanoes near the Galapagos Islands. The feathery red part is like a gill. It’s filled with blood. It absorbs chemicals from the water and the volcano vent. Image: NOAA

I talked about ocean exploration with my friend Gretchen Rollwagen-Bollens. She’s a biological oceanographer and plankton ecologist at Washington State University.

She told me that you’re right that we’ve only explored about 5% of the ocean. But it isn’t because we stopped trying. The ocean is just massive.

The ocean contains more than 321 million cubic miles of water. To imagine that, think of something that’s about a mile away from you. You might need to use a map app. Or ask a grownup for a landmark.

Now picture a giant 3D cube that same distance on each side. It’s 1 mile long, 1 mile wide and 1 mile deep. You would need 321 million of those to equal the ocean. Or think of a 1-gallon milk jug. All the water in the ocean would fill about 325 quintillion jugs.

When scientists say we haven’t explored much of the ocean, they don’t mean just the bottom of the ocean. They mean all that water between the bottom and the surface, too. That’s called the water column(). It’s the biggest habitat on the planet.

Rollwagen-Bollens told me that exploring every bit of the water column would be tough. There aren’t really landmarks there. It all pretty much looks like water. Plus, once you get deeper than the sun can reach, it’s completely dark.

Artist rendition of the water column which is divided into five zones from the surface to the seafloor. Each zone varies in pressure, light, temperature, oxygen, nutrients, and biological diversity
Image: Barbara Ambrose/NOAA

The water column is divided into zones. Each zone is different in terms of temperature, amount of light and oxygen, and what lives there.

“Visiting every place in the ocean wouldn’t help us learn much,” Rollwagen-Bollens said. “The organisms and features of the deep ocean are distributed broadly. So, it makes more sense to be targeted.”

That’s why scientists explore the ocean using sonar from boats or satellites in space. They send sound waves into the ocean to make a picture of what’s underwater. When they see something interesting, they can send a remote-controlled vehicle. Or they can climb inside a submersible like the Alvin to visit in person.

Those vehicles have cameras and robotic arms for taking measurements and samples. Scientists can even take water samples and use the little bits of environmental DNA in there to figure out what living things have been in that water.

Even though we’ve visited only about 5% of the ocean, we know a lot about the ocean floor. Scientists have used satellite data to roughly map the whole thing. They’ve also made detailed maps of about 26% of the ocean floor. That’s done using high-tech gear mounted on ships—like multibeam sonar. They plan to map the entire ocean floor in detail by 2030.

That will help us understand what life is like on the ocean floor—and in the water column, too. Scientists think there could be a million species in the ocean. But we’ve probably only met about one-third of them so far.

That’s a lot of species we don’t know yet. By choosing the best places to explore, I’m sure we’ll worm our way into meeting some of them.

Sincerely,

Dr. Universe

First Rabies-positive Bat in 2024 Identified in Ottawa County

If you find a bat in your home, check it out before you let it out!

(HOLLAND, MI.) – The Ottawa County Department of Public Health (OCDPH) has been notified by the Michigan Bureau of Laboratories (BOL) that a bat recently submitted from Ottawa County has tested positive for rabies. This is the first case of rabies in an animal in the county this year. There were no reported cases of rabies in animals or humans in 2023. As of July 12, 2024, there have been 18 reported cases of animals with rabies in the state of Michigan. The risk of exposure to a rabid bat is higher from May through September when bats are more active. Residents should take steps to protect their families and animals from rabies.

People and pets are usually exposed to rabies when they are bitten or scratched by an infected animal. Of particular concern are exposures that occur when a bat is found in a room with people who have been asleep, or a bat is found with an unattended child or impaired adult who cannot be sure of their contact with the bat.

Rabies is a fatal, but preventable disease. Because of this, it is important to collect the bat for rabies testing. Post-exposure treatment is recommended for people who are exposed to a potentially rabid animal. Treatment is not necessary if the animal tests negative for rabies.

Protect your family and pets from rabies by taking these simple steps:

Avoid contact with bats and other wild animals. Do not keep wild animals as pets and do not try to rehabilitate wild animals yourself. Wild animals can carry rabies without looking sick.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, seek immediate medical attention.

If you find a bat in your home, do not release or dispose of it. Safely confine or collect the bat if possible and contact the OCDPH at 616-396-5266 to determine if it should be tested for rabies. If testing is needed, animals may be brought to Harbor Humane Society (616-399-2119 or harborhumane.org) to be sent for testing. More information on how to collect a bat safely can be found here or in this YouTube video.

Protect your pets by getting them vaccinated against rabies. Even cats that live indoors and never go outside can encounter a bat that gets inside the home.

If your animal is bitten or scratched by a wild animal, or if you believe they have had unsupervised contact with wildlife, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. Even if your pet is currently vaccinated against rabies, additional actions may need to be taken to prevent them from becoming infected. If possible, safely confine or capture the wild animal without touching it and contact your local animal control officer or veterinarian, as the animal may need to be tested for rabies.

Dr. Universe: Why do people like cute animals more than ugly ones? – Brayden, 9, Ohio

    Dear Brayden,

Not to brag, but when I was a kitten, humans would see me and squeal. Maybe it was my big, sparkly eyes or my teeny, fluffy paws.

I asked my friend Giuseppe Giannotti why people found me so adorable. He’s a scientist at Washington State University. He studies the brain.

He told me that humans like cute animals because they remind them of babies.

“We’re drawn to find traits in animals that are similar to what we think is cute in humans,” Giannotti said. “The cutest things in humans are babies—you know, big heads, giant eyes, soft cheeks—and we project this to everything around us.”

The idea is called baby schema. Seeing a baby makes us pay attention. It switches on our instinct to take care of something. That’s one way nature makes sure that babies get what they need—even though they’re often loud and stinky and need help all the time.

It works because your brain has a built-in reward system.

Let’s say you eat some delicious chocolate. Your brain starts pumping out a chemical message called dopamine. That message travels to another part of your brain. It sticks to the brain cells there. It gives you a rush of happy feelings. Then another part of your brain connects that happy feeling with the chocolate you ate. Now, the next time you see chocolate, you remember how good you felt. You’re more likely to eat it again.

The same thing happens when you see something cute—like a baby or an adorable kitten.

“Things that are cute drive the same neuronal circuits of reward,” Giannotti said. “Cute things can quickly increase activity in specific brain regions with the release of dopamine. That gives us pleasure associated with something that’s cute.”

That happy feeling is a reward our brain gives us for noticing the cute thing and wanting to take care of it.

Humans aren’t the only animals with a reward system like that. Dopamine is one of the oldest chemical messages we know about. Lots of animals have evolved similar ways to make sure they do important things—like eat or take care of their babies.

But what about the ugly animals?

All animals are related to each other. But scientists say it’s harder for people to connect with animals that are far from humans on the family tree. Looking into the face of a chimpanzee just doesn’t feel the same as looking at the face of a tick—not even a squirmy baby tick.

Maybe that’s why it’s harder to get people excited about protecting animals that seem unfamiliar or less cute—like insects—even though they do important jobs.

Giannotti said the quick jolt of happiness from seeing something cute is good for people. Watching adorable animals in real life or on videos makes you feel better.

Maybe add in a few videos of less familiar animals. It could expand your idea of who’s cute.()

Even if they’re not as adorably floofy as baby me.

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Universe

Local Artist and Canadian Squatcher Collaborate on New Comic Book

Searching for Sasquatch: The Hidden Treasure of Bigfoot Valley, a brand-new comic book based on Canadian Bigfoot researcher Jason Kenzie’s documentary film series, “Searching for Sasquatch,” was recently published as a collaborative effort by Jason Kenzie, and local Michigan artist, Tim Holtrop.

Jason and Tim developed the plot for this exciting adventure story, in which a determined team, based on Jason’s real-life friends from some of his expeditions—the She-Squatchers, a trio of all-female researchers, as well as his friends Todd Parsons and David Dominique—ventures deep into the forests of British Columbia in search of an elusive Cryptid, stumbling upon a wild, unexplored valley, and a secret cache of ancient treasure that’s protected by a tribe of Sasquatch.

Jason wanted to make a comic book for a long time, and finally found the opportunity when Tim, freelance storyboard artist and illustrator, as well as a fellow Bigfoot fan, reached out to him. Tim worked on the art for the comic, with some help from his wife and daughter on editing, and from four of his sons doing the coloring, lettering, and layout. Each family member enjoyed his or her part in producing this thoroughly entertaining and heartwarming story.

    artist – editor team.

Tim has been interested in Bigfoot since he was a kid. “Although, I’ve never seen one, I do believe there could be a creature like that out there. As a commercial artist, I draw everyday products and practical things for advertising, but I’m also fascinated by the wonders of creation, and enjoy drawing stories of the possible adventures people can have out in nature.” He sees the world as a big place, with many mysterious things yet to be discovered.

As a photojournalist, Jason’s love for animals led him to become a pet photographer. His interest in Bigfoot began when the COVID-19 pandemic restricted traveling. So, in quest of adventure, Jason set out into the forests of Canada and the United States, listening to the eyewitness testimony of people who have encountered the infamous Sasquatch. “My entire life, I’ve heard about Bigfoot. Growing up, everyone used to talk about the Sasquatch, but I never really took interest. I always thought it was an urban legend,” Jason said.

“I’m still kind of a skeptic when it comes to Bigfoot… I haven’t had a daytime sighting of one of these creatures, so I can’t say 100% that Bigfoot is real,” Jason said. But he still keeps an open mind to the possibility of the Sasquatch’s existence. He has filmed his field research into the subject, and made 11 documentaries about his quests to find the Sasquatch. Jason’s favorite part of his research into this evasive Cryptid is being able to make new friends and meet new people, while hiking and camping in beautiful outdoor locations.

Adults and kids alike love the colorful pages and fast-paced story in the Searching for Sasquatch comic, which is available now at Amazon.com. “I thought it would be neat for kids to enjoy Bigfoot,” said Jason. Both Jason and Tim have had good responses from people who enjoyed the comic, which is being received well in the Bigfoot community and beyond.

And as Jason says, “Let the adventures always
    continue.”
