A Home for the Holidays: Ottawa Celebrates Adoption Day

Courts host Adoption Day Celebration on November 22

The holiday to give thanks is upon us and the importance of family is top of mind. Families come together in many of ways, one of which, is adoption. Recognized nationally since 1995 and statewide since 2002, November is Adoption Month. Locally, the 20th Circuit and Ottawa County Probate Courts celebrate Adoption Day alongside the Michigan Supreme Court on the Tuesday prior to Thanksgiving. To honor this tradition, the Court will host its twentieth event in hopes it will inspire some to open their hearts and homes to consider foster care and adoption.

With great joy, the Court will kick off what is warmly known as the “happiest day at the court” with a brief ceremony on Tuesday, November 22 at 9:00am. Confirmation hearings presided by Chief Probate Court Judge, Mark A. Feyen and Family Division Judge, Kent D. Engle, will follow. All events will take place at the Fillmore Complex in West Olive.

Please join us in celebrating the families who choose to open their hearts to these children and provide them with their forever home.

Local and State Adoption Facts:

In fiscal year 2022, more than 1,600 Michigan children were adopted through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services or private agencies.
At any given time, there are approximately 10,300 children in Michigan’s foster care system and of those, nearly 250 children are in need of a forever family through adoption.
Typically, adoptions are finalized in private, but on Adoption Day, more than 30 courts statewide are expected to host events, to raise awareness and to inspire more families to think about adoption.
People can adopt whether they are single or married. They do not have to be wealthy or own their own home but must have adequate financial resources to provide for a family.
Children in the foster care system become eligible for adoption following termination of parental rights due to abuse or neglect. The goal for most children in the foster care system is reunification with their families.
There is support for families who want to adopt. In fact, approximately 95 percent of children who are available for adoption qualify for assistance to help families with some of the costs of bringing children into their homes.

Notre Dame Professor to Speak About the Future of Rechargeable Batteries

On Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. Muskegon Community College (MCC) will host a free, public lecture regarding the role of batteries in vehicles and our renewable energy future. Associate Professor Dr. Jennifer Schaefer from the University of Notre Dame will present “Advanced Rechargeable Batteries for Energy Storage” in Room 1300 at the MCC Stevenson Center located at 221 South Quarterline Road in Muskegon.

Schaefer is an expert in renewable energy from the Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering and also serves as the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Notre Dame University. She will provide an overview of the role of batteries in a renewable energy future, the material chemistry of current commercialized Li-ion batteries, and the design considerations for future generation battery design to meet our global energy needs.

While the cost of the generation of renewable electricity has plummeted, storage and use of that electricity at a large scale presents substantial technical challenges. Rechargeable batteries are believed to be a scalable solution for the storage of intermittently generated electricity (from solar or wind) that cannot be immediately used. Rechargeable batteries are also a means for vehicle electrification to reduce our dependence on liquid fuels for transportation.

Dr. Andrew Wible, director of the MCC lecture series said, “From automobiles to solar panels, we need good batteries. I am fascinated to find out what the future of battery technology holds and invite others to join us!”

Kick off the holiday season with a visit to Hackley Park! You’ll have the chance to meet some friendly reindeer, take a few pictures, and watch the tree lighting as we enter the holiday season together.
After the Tree Lighting, head over to Hackley Library to meet Santa Claus (Santa will be at Hackley Library following the tree lighting, and will remain at the library until around 7:30pm).

All Ages Take and Make – Gratitude Garland
Available through the month of November at Hackley Library
Gratitude: the quality of being thankful. Each day of November we will think of something we are thankful for and write it on a piece of paper (provided in your take and make kit). Each piece of paper will be added to a piece of yarn to hang somewhere at home. At the end of the month, you’ll have a colorful decoration and can share all you’re thankful for with our friends and family. Take and Make kits are available through the month of November while supplies last. All ages. Free.

Progressive Women Urge People of All Political Stripes To Reject Extreme Proposal 3

A group of progressive and left-leaning women said that Proposal 3 is too extreme because it would endanger the health and safety of vulnerable women and children by deregulating the abortion industry and should be rejected by Michigan voters this November.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re pro-choice or pro-life. This is about keeping women safe, and making sure that they are not put in unsafe situations when faced with an unplanned pregnancy,” said Kristen Day, executive director of the national organization Democrats For Life.

The slate of speakers at the Michigan State Capitol steps on October 13, 2022, consistently called out supporters of Proposal 3 for falsely portraying the proposal as restoring Roe or keeping the status quo, when in fact the amendment would go far beyond that.

“Despite the slick marketing attempts to make Proposal 3 sound like it’s keeping the status quo, the reality is the wording of this proposed constitutional amendment would give the abortion industry free rein to self-regulate far beyond what Roe ever established,” said Sarah Burchart, the state chapter leader of Democrats for Life of Michigan.

The text of the proposed constitutional amendment creates a “fundamental right” to reproductive rights that includes abortion, which cannot be regulated by the state if the woman’s “autonomous decision-making” is infringed upon. Legal experts have said this language would invalidate existing health and safety laws implemented on abortion clinics and bar the Legislature from trying to enact regulations on abortion in the future.

Burchart said if Proposal 3 passes, bad actors in the abortion industry would be able to continue to operate without accountability because they could claim protection under the amendment language that stipulates that the state cannot “penalize, prosecute, or otherwise take adverse action against someone for aiding or assisting a pregnant individual in exercising their right to reproductive freedom.”

“Some Prop 3 advocates have tried to claim that nobody would ever use their language in this way. But the only assurance I’ve gotten is maybe the courts will sort it out later. Would we accept this answer from any other kind of industry, like tobacco companies? If we wouldn’t assume self-regulation for tobacco companies or big oil, we shouldn’t accept it for the abortion industry bankrolling this proposal either,” Burchart said.

Monica Galloway, former Flint Councilwoman and president of the Michigan Municipal League, noted that the amendment would take away the right for parents to be informed if their daughter is seeking an abortion, due to how the amendment extends the fundamental right to abortion to children and blocks any restrictions on it if the restriction infringed on the person’s autonomous decision-making.

“I am asking parents to take a serious look at what this says…if Prop 3 does pass, women in this state will be travailing and wailing over the fact that they have given up their parental rights to help their children,” Galloway said.

The women also made an appeal to Democrats, progressives, and left-leaning people like themselves to look at Proposal 3 and see how dangerous and extreme it is, and how it does not line up with Democratic and progressive ideals.

“There’s nothing progressive about what Prop 3 is proposing, which is to remove all safety regulations for abortion seekers. There’s no progress in that,” said Terrisa Bukovinac, president of the Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising, who described herself as atheist, feminist and leftist.

“This gathering of progressive women show that regardless of how voters feel about the issue of abortion, Proposal 3 is extreme and should be rejected by all Michigan voters,” said Christen Pollo, spokesperson for Citizens to Support MI Women and Children, the official ballot question committee opposed to Proposal 3. “Proposal 3 will make abortion more harmful and dangerous for women, making this truly an anti-woman proposal.”

Lucy Moye, national chair of the American Solidarity Party – which carries a pro-life for the whole life platform – emphasized the importance for Michigan voters to go beyond the summary of the proposal that will be found on their ballot and to read the actual constitutional amendment.

“These radical changes had been quietly slipped into the text in such a way that Michigan voters will not see them if they only read the summary of the proposal that appears on the ballot. That’s a really important point. The summary is simple and innocuous. But the text itself, which is what the courts and the lawyers will use, is anything but,” Moye said.

“Proposal three is just wrong for children, it is just wrong for women, and it is just wrong for Michigan,” said Kimberly Hill Knott, a former congressional candidate.

Democrats For Life is a national organization of Democrats who are pro-life for the whole life, and a coalition member of the No on Proposal 3 campaign. Michigan voters are urged to vote no on Proposal 3 on November 8 or beforehand on their absentee ballots.

MUSKEGON, MI — The Muskegon Museum of Art will host an Appraisal Fair on Saturday, October 22 from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Appraisers from DuMouchelles Auction House in Detroit will be on hand at the Muskegon Museum of Art to evaluate fine art, antiques, and other collectibles. DuMouchelles appraisers combine decades of professional experience in many areas and have regularly appeared on Antiques Roadshow.

The MMA Appraisal Fair provides an opportunity to help participants decide if a formal appraisal (apart from this event) should be sought for high-value items.

Waterman Selected as Deputy Ottawa County Administrator

After wading through a pool of 47 applicants, Ottawa County Administrator John Shay announced today that Patrick Waterman has been selected to serve as the next Deputy County Administrator. Waterman’s contract was approved at the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners meeting on September 27.

“We are thrilled to have Patrick join the Ottawa County Team,” said Shay. “His many years in city management, community development and municipal planning will serve the residents well.”

Waterman has been a resident and public servant of Ottawa County for over twenty years. He and his family currently reside in the City of Hudsonville where he has served as City Manager since 2010. During his time there, Waterman led the city’s efforts to revitalize their downtown and expand pedestrian connectivity. He was instrumental in the completion of several economic development and quality of life enhancement projects. Prior to Hudsonville, Waterman served as the Community Development Director for Grand Haven Charter Township for eight years. He also has over a decade of private sector experience, having worked for various municipal planning and engineering consulting firms in Michigan.

Waterman received his Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning from Michigan State University, and Master of Public Administration from Grand Valley State University. He is a certified professional planner with the American Institute of Certified Planners.

“I am very excited to begin this next chapter of my career,” said Waterman. “I have a tremendous amount of admiration and respect for Ottawa County. Their reputation as a model of efficiency, collaboration, and innovation is recognized statewide, traits that can only be attributed to the county’s exceptional leadership and capable team of dedicated employees.

It has been a tremendous honor and privilege to serve the wonderful community of Hudsonville these past twelve years. I now look forward to the opportunity to take on new challenges and serve at the county level.”

Patrick Waterman will fill the position vacated when John Shay was promoted to County Administrator in March of 2022. The Deputy County Administrator position pays $158,000 per year and Waterman will take his post on November 21.

Temporary Shoreline Drive Lane Closures Begin October 3rd

MUSKEGON, MI – The first phase of the “road diet” study by the City of Muskegon on Shoreline Drive is scheduled to roll out this fall, starting the week of Oct. 3.

With the goal of informing potential uses along this corridor — including increased walkability, bicycling and other pedestrian amenities and recreational opportunities — the first phase of the pilot project will reduce lanes for approximately six weeks on the four-lane US-31 Business Route (Shoreline Drive) through the city’s downtown waterfront. A single lane of Shoreline Drive will be closed in each direction between Seventh Street and Terrace Street so that routine road maintenance can be conducted on Shoreline Drive.

With a “road diet,” city officials are hopeful that slower traffic speeds and fewer vehicular accidents will make this roadway safer and easier to cross from the historic downtown to the waterfront.

After City of Muskegon Department of Public Works’ crews complete half of the concrete pavement repairs, the lane closures will switch to the other two lanes the week of Oct. 17. All of the lane closures and maintenance work on Shoreline Drive through the downtown should be completed by the week of Nov. 14. Engineers will use this routine maintenance closure to collect preliminary data on the road diet and have those results to the city commission and community by the end of the year.

Phase two of the “road diet” study is tentatively planned for spring/summer of 2023 – but still needs commission approval. This timeframe will allow for higher traffic volumes that come with tourism and lakeshore events, according to Public Works Director Leo Evans. Traffic control devices such as traffic cones, pavement markings, barriers and planters will temporarily eliminate one lane in each direction. The public space created by the lane reductions will be tested for bicycle use, landscaped plantings, public art and community gathering areas.

The cost of the project is approximately $100,000 and has been partially approved by the Muskegon City Commission. With the observations and data from the two test periods, the city’s consultant Progressive AE will provide results and recommendations to city officials in the second half of 2023.

Any permanent reconfiguration of Shoreline Drive will require approval through the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and could be a lengthy process of public input, design, funding and construction. The city will conduct public forums to seek community input on any proposed changes to Shoreline Drive. A study preview event on July 25 was well attended.

Sportsmen for Youth – Youth Day – September 10th

Sportsmen for Youth – Youth Day, which is always held on the first Saturday after Labor Day, is September 10, 2022 this year. Youth Day is held at Muskegon County Fairgrounds, 2261 Heights Ravenna Road, Fruitport, Michigan. This will be our 28^th year. The gates open at 9am and close at 3pm. This is a free family friendly event to introduce our youth to the many activities available to them in the great outdoors, however only youth under 17 years of age can participate in the activities. Persons over 17 are welcome to sit in on all the seminars. Each youth participating will receive a t-shirt and a ticket for lunch (while supplies last) and a raffle ticket.

This year we have received commitments from approximately 60 exhibitors including the following: a rock climbing wall, the Coast Guard Axillary and a vessel from Coast Guard Station, Muskegon, the Critter Barn, Muskegon Conservation Club, Grand Haven Steelheaders, with their fishing simulator, Friends of Ottawa County Parks, Jumpn’ Jupiter Skate Center, Coopersville Sportsman’s Club, Michigan United Conservation Club, a reptile and a birds of prey display and the West Michigan Walleye Club, to name a few. Once again there will be the trout pond, put on by Michigan Anglers Assoc., with 1000 trout to be caught. The Hawg Trough, a 50 foot long aquarium mounted on a semi-trailer, will be here again this year and will be stocked with native fish for viewing. It is also used as the stage for seminars with Mark Martin and some of his fishing staff. There are also mentored shooting of firearms, however you need to present a Hunter Safety Certificate in order to shoot. Attendees will also be able to experience various safety exhibits, demonstrations and tours of fire trucks, EMT vehicles and law enforcement displays. There will also be a 9/11 tribute at noon. United Way of the Lakeshore’s Day of Caring is Back with 17 Sites of Service

LAUNCHING OUR 104^TH ANNUAL CAMPAIGN OF CARING — Friday, September 9th

MUSKEGON, MI – United Way of the Lakeshore is pleased to announce that the 29-year tradition of Day of Caring will serve as the kick-off of our 104^thAnnual Campaign of Caring. Each fall we celebrate community by giving back time and treasure to the communities we call home. As in past years, the Day of Caring brings hundreds of volunteers from throughout our local region to work on service projects to assist local veterans and to build thriving communities. We will gather in downtown Muskegon at United Way of the Lakeshore, 31 East Clay Avenue on Friday, September 9^th, 2022 at 8am for a brief program, registration and pancake breakfast served by the Muskegon Lions Club.

This year United Way is again honoring our Veterans with over 10 homes on the list for support. School supplies collected from our partner companies and organizations are being sorted and taken to our schools to support the teachers with children’s needs. In addition, trees will be planted to support the environment by our youth, and two area park projects will be worked on as well. There are also two projects to support our adult foster care programs. Volunteers will be paying tribute to the greatest heroes in our community, our veterans, by hosting work projects at area veteran homes.

Another project called “Veteran’s History Project” will be taking place with the community’s senior volunteers & AmeriCorps Seniors. Volunteers will be recording Veteran Stories via video and helping veterans fill out the paperwork for their stories to be submitted to the Library of Congress. This will be the first of a series of opportunities to interview our veterans. Our next large interviewing day will take place on Veterans Day in November.

“I believe our time, talent, and treasure are a worthwhile investment for our community. As a longtime United Way volunteer, I’ve seen the positive changes in the community through the work of United Way working to meet the needs of vulnerable families in our region,” shared Jack Russell, President of Rolar Products and 2022-23 Campaign Chair. “No matter the crisis, United Way has always remained steadfast to LIVE UNITED and take care of our community. Whitecaps Turn Away Cubs in 2-1 Win

Comstock Park, Mich. – The West Michigan Whitecaps stepped up in the biggest moments, as a play at the plate in the ninth inning served as the key moment in a 2-1 win over the South Bend Cubs on Wednesday night in front of 6,986 fans at LMCU Ballpark.

Leading 2-1 in the ninth, a ground ball from South Bend’s Luis Verdugo nearly changed the entire complexion of Wednesday’s game, but a slick play from shortstop Trei Cruz perfect throw to catcher Josh Crouch cut down baserunner Brennan Davis attempting to score the tying run as West Michigan preserved the lead on the way to breaking a three-game losing streak.

The scoring was limited Wednesday, as both starting pitchers found a way to post quality starts in the contest. The Whitecaps posted their only runs in the opening inning on an RBI-single by Jace Jung before Cruz lifted a sacrifice fly to score Jake Holton. West Michigan starting pitcher Carlos Guzman tossed a brilliant six innings to tie for the longest start by a ‘Caps pitcher this season, allowing three hits without walking a batter and striking out four. Cubs right Porter Hodge threw six frames of his own, allowing just two runs while striking out six. After two scoreless innings from the West Michigan bullpen, lefty closer Andrew Magno preserved the victory by collecting his tenth save of the season.

Guzman (8-6) is now tied for third in the Midwest League with eight wins, while Hodge (2-2) takes his second loss. The ‘Caps improve to 61-55 and 30-20 in the second half, while the Cubs fall to 65-51 and 31-19 in the second half. The Whitecaps sit two games back of the Lake County Captains for first place in the Midwest League East second-half standings. Holton and infielder Carlos Irigoyen each collected a pair of his in the victory, while Irigoyen’s multi-hit game marked his first for the ‘Caps this season.

West Michigan Voices: Zine Collection
Hackley Library’s West Michigan Voices: Zine Collection is a way for you get to your voice heard! This interactive, community collection aims to be a creative outlet for adults 18 and older living in West Michigan (this includes outside of Muskegon County as well), and also aims to be an amplifier for marginalized voices in our communities.
This special collection will consist of submitted zines from adults, and will be available for patrons to read while in Hackley Library.
What is a zine you ask? Zines are very easy to make, and are often in the form of a simple booklet. They can be as easy as taking regular copy/printer paper, folding it, and stapling or taping it together. The content of a zine can be almost anything! A zine can share your stories, showcase your art, display your photography, show your poetry, share a family history, exhibit your comics, etc. Really anything that the creator wants to say!
Thanks to a grant from the American Rescue Plan, HPL was able to purchase a scanner, which means we will be able to scan each accepted submission and store them digitally in our local history collection, so they can be read anywhere in the world. This means that, even when the physical copy wears out, there will always be a digital copy of their work available. The digital copies will act as a time capsule, reflecting the lives of people in West Michigan – their thoughts, feelings, and creativity.
We are currently in the phase of accepting zine submissions (we will officially launch the collection in October 2022). The more people who choose to submit zines, the more diverse and healthier our collection will be to unveil in October.

Last Chance to Visit the Koalas at John Ball Zoo

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Join us for 3 days of Wild and Wonderful at Koalapalooza this Labor Day Weekend. John Ball Zoo will host Koalapalooza, a three-day celebration of all thing’s koalas – raising awareness for their conservation and saying “farewell” to Noorundi and Iluka, two male koalas that have been visiting John Ball Zoo since May.

Koalapalooza runs Saturday, September 3rd through Monday, September 5th from 9:00a.m.-6:00p.m. each day. Daily events include a steel drum band, live music lineup, face painting, strolling animal experiences and daily cookouts that include turkey legs, BBQ Brisket sandwich, polish sausages and more. Guests attending Koalapalooza can watch Zookeepers interact with the koalas at 10:30a.m. with an additional feeding at 3:00p.m. each day.

Koalapalooza is included in the cost of daily admission and is free to members. To speed up your entry to the event, purchase your tickets in advance at https://shop.jbzoo.org/all/tickets.

Noorundi (4 yrs), and Iluka (2 yrs), are visiting John Ball Zoo on-loan as part of the San Diego Zoo’s Koala Education and Conservation Program. After Labor Day, the koalas will be heading back to the San Diego Zoo.

Koalas were recently raised from the status of Vulnerable, to Endangered in Queensland, New South Wales, and the Australian Capital Territory under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC). Threats to koalas include habitat destruction, domestic dog attacks, bushfires, and road accidents.

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance maintains the largest koala population outside Australia. This program generates funding to support research and conservation initiatives ranging from habitat mapping to studying koala biology in collaboration with partners. There is a strong element of conservation education and outreach to the program, which has been in place for more than 30 years. Koalas have recently been listed as Endangered due to rising threats to their native populations in Australia.

John Ball Zoo does not have plans to bring koalas under our care permanently, but we are happy to have partnered with the San Diego Zoo to host Noorundi and Iluka for the past several months and to help continue spreading awareness of this adorable species.

Pal’s Diner Grand Opening – September 1, 2022

MUSKEGON, Mich. – Kick off the holiday weekend – 50’s style – with a retro Bike Night at Hot Rod Harley Davidson in downtown Muskegon on Thursday September 1, 2022 from 5:00pm – 9:00pm. Everyone is invited.

Get your first look at the fully restored 1950’s PALS Diner and enjoy burgers and fries by Hamburger Mikey. Attendees are encouraged to dress in 50’s or 60”s attire. Prizes will be awarded.

Adult beverages will be served from the T-N-T Bar inside Hot Rod Harley Davidson. Live music featuring music of the 50’s & 60’s performed by “The Fabulous Oldies But Goodies Band” will keep you rockin’ all night long.

The diner originally opened in 1954 in New Jersey, before being moved to the Grand Rapids area in the 90’s. The diner closed its doors in 2020. In 2021 the diner was purchased by the owners of Hot Rod Davidson, Mark & Scott Campbell, and transported in spectacular fashion to Muskegon. They reattachedthe entrance and restored the 67-year-old landmark to its previous Pal’s Diner name and glory, fixing neon signs, lighting, décor and rotting wood.

Meet Garrett Soldano, Republican Candidate for Governor

On Saturday, July 9, 2022, a Muskegon County Meet and Greet was held for gubernatorial candidate Garrett Soldano at First Congregational Church in Fruitport, Michigan.

Pastor Mike Scott led a prayer for Garrett, for his coworkers, advisors and influencers, and for America. Next, Mick Bricker, candidate for the 88^th District House seat, introduced himself, speaking about his faith, family, and Conservative views. Bricker encouraged the audience to support Soldano’s campaign, before introducing Garrett himself.

Soldano made a rousing speech that outlined what his campaign and movement have done, what they will do if elected, and why they can be trusted to represent Michiganders. For over two years, Soldano and many Michiganders have been fighting for our Constitutional freedoms, he said. They also have held Governor Whitmer accountable for the excessive, 28-day emergency lockdown of Michigan during COVID-19 and the limitations on where people could go and what they could buy. Garrett believes that, additionally, by quarantining healthy people and forcing mask mandates, the governor continued to take things too far.

Soldano said that when he couldn’t find anyone in government to stop Whitmer’s state of emergency, he and other concerned citizens stood up and began the Facebook page “Michiganders Against Excessive Quarantine.” Before Facebook shut the page down, nearly 400,000 people had joined, being encouraged to contact the legislature about not extending the lockdown. Subsequently, Soldano continued his work, cofounding the “Stand Up, Michigan” page. Soldano’s movement wrote a resolution to get the legislature to press the governor for disclosure of hospital death information. They also put together the Unlock Michigan petition, which forced the legislature to repeal the 1945 Emergency Powers of Governor Act.

“We are doing amazing things,” Soldano said, which is why he promises the gloves are going to come off when he debates Governor Whitmer after the Primaries, just like he hasn’t gone easy on other opponents.

Garrett says that, by the end of this upcoming election, many more amazing people are going to represent Michiganders at all levels of law, including Kristina Karamo (for Secretary of State), and Matthew DePerno (for Attorney General). He added, “We have recruited, and helped recruit, five thousand licensed election inspectors so we can take back our elections and our voices.” And, according to Garrett, his campaign has raised $2,000,000, the majority (roughly 96%) being donations of less than $200.

Soldano believes that if he succeeds in both the primary and the Midterm elections, his win will create a ripple effect that will spread to other states, encouraging them to vote in more Conservatives. He said that his movement will have to work hard, but that they have a strong determination to activate and win Michigan back.

Garrett’s to-do list as governor is pretty long and involves “draining the swamp”, as he said, quoting his hero, former president Trump. Soldano and DePerno plan to investigate the multitudes of abuses they have seen the current state administration commit, touching on mask mandates, over-regulation, excessive lockdowns, government spending, and election integrity, among other issues. Garrett also promised a thorough investigation of nursing home deaths connected with COVID-19 regulations. Getting Liberal ideology out of schools; boosting tourism, small business, and jobs; and making Michigan energy independent, are also high on Garrett’s list. He encouraged his constituents and supporters to vote people who represent them into local school boards. And according to Soldano, mandates to force Liberal ideology on businesses must go as well.

Garrett said that he sees hope for Michigan’s future. He said that his campaign is taking back lost ground. “We have to continue to be engaged,” he said. “We need to continue to be activated, and be involved at all levels, and back those candidates that are going to put Michigan and your families first…I will always represent you. There is no political narrative, or political agenda, or political career [why] I want to do this. I want to get in there and do what’s right.”

I. The Regular meeting of the Board of Education was called to order at 7:12 p.m. by Board President, Dave Hazekamp.

II. ROLL CALL: Present – Elroy Buckner, Tim Burgess, Kris Cole, Susan Franklin, Dave Hazekamp, Steve Kelly, and JB Meeuwenberg.

III. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Item 22-086. MOTION by Cole, SECOND by Franklin to approve the agenda as presented.
MOTION CARRIED 7-0

IV. PRESENTATIONS
Troop 1127 Boy Scout, Brady Kemmerling presented information on his Eagle Scout project. He has proposed installing a stainless steel 3D letter F surrounded by a retaining wall near the football field ticket booth. This project will recognize all past, present, and future Trojan athletes. Brady will work with Operations Director, John Winskas to finalize plans. His project will be on the July Board agenda for official approval.

V. COMMUNICATIONS
Superintendent, Jason Kennedy recognized Transportation Director, Kathy Randall for receiving Certified Transportation Director certification from MSBO.

Board Secretary, Steve Kelly read aloud a note from Cindy Briggs and a note from Sandy Sorensen, both thanking the Board for hosting the Retirement Celebration and for the keepsake clock.

Steve Kelly also read a thank you card from Edgewood second graders thanking the Board for allowing them to attend a learning trip to the Lakeshore Museum Center.

VI. SUPERINTENDENT/ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS
Curriculum Director, Allison Camp gave an End of Year Goal Reporting and Data Review Update. She spoke about 2021-22 district assessment scores, how the scores compared to the state, and explained future goals of the district. Allison presented results demographically as well. She compared results in the following categories: male students, female students, economically disadvantaged, and special education students.

The committee discussed Budget, North Muskegon Business Services, Section 31o Allocation, Estimated State and Federal Grant Allocations, L-4029, PLE Report, the purchase of an Engraver, and the Adair Lawsuit.

Steve Kelly reported on a Personnel Committee meeting held June 20, 2022. Dave Hazekamp, Steve Kelly, and Jason Kennedy were present. The committee discussed the Director of Technology position, the Beach Principal position, the Central Office Administrative Assistant position, Teacher Hiring Recommendations and the Agreement for Business Services with North Muskegon. They also reviewed items from each of the other Board Committee meetings.

Susan Franklin reported on a Student Affairs Committee meeting held June 20, 2022. Dave Hazekamp, Susan Franklin, Tim Burgess, Jason Kennedy, and Allison Camp were present. The committee discussed End of Year Goal Reporting, Virtual Programming for 2022-23, Curricular Resource Recommendations, Student Discipline Updates to Student Handbooks, and Athletic Parent-Student Handbook updates. They also reviewed items from each of the other Board Committee meetings.

Jason Kennedy presented Maribeth Clarke with gifts and a celebratory cake in honor of her retirement.

Dave Hazekamp commended Brenda Baker and the Adult Ed staff on their graduation ceremony held June 14, 2022.

JB Meeuwenberg mentioned that the Edgewood Trojan Trek raised over $35,000!
