Rep. VanWoerkom Sworn in to Represent New 88th House District

Rep. invites residents to contact office at new phone number

State Rep. Greg VanWoerkom (R-Norton Shores) was sworn into office for his third term today. He now represents the people of Michigan’s new 88th House District, which encompasses parts of Muskegon and Ottawa counties, including Ferrysburg, Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Norton Shores, and the townships of Crockery, Olive, Port Sheldon, and Robinson.

The representative said he is eager to get to work addressing the issues that matter to West Michigan residents, such as inflation relief, public safety, parental involvement in education, access to child care and more.

“I represent a new district, the House is under new leadership, and our state is facing new challenges,” VanWoerkom said. “I am ready to get to work and continue to be a voice for the people of West Michigan. I am confident House Republicans and Democrats will be able to find common ground on the important issues facing our great state.”

Rep. VanWoerkom invites residents to contact his new 88th District office with any concerns, thoughts or ideas about state government and legislation by phone at (517) 373-1830 or by addressing mail to N-1192 Anderson House Office Building, P.O. Box 30014, Lansing, MI 48909. His email address, GregVanWoerkom@House.MI.gov, remains the same.

Art Gallery & Collaboration Facilitator to Host Networking Event for Women

flyer

Grand Rapids, MI: Local consulting firm Crooked Tree Creative and new local gallery, All Art Works are partnering to present a female focused networking event benefiting Girls Rock Grand Rapids. Ladies’ Night is happening on Friday, January 20th, starting at 6pm at one of the hottest new spots for creatives- All Art Works (333 Cesar E. Chavez Ave SW). This event is an effort to cultivate relationships and collaboration between female professionals who are already beginning to make their mark in Grand Rapids. This event is open to female and non-binary identifying professionals, creatives, and community members in West Michigan.

Because of All Art Works history of helping create unique opportunities and events for artists, it was a natural fit for Crooked Tree Creative’s Ladies’ Night Series. Crooked Tree Creative is a local female owned consulting agency based on collaboration. Elle Lively, owner of CTC and founder of the Ladies’ Night series, says “I continue to be inspired by the number of female creative professionals in the West Michigan area and their ambition, drive and talent.” In the true spirit of collaboration, there are endless opportunities when such forces come together. The event will feature a rotating art show featuring female and non-binary artists, curated by Artist at Large, Calli Salazar. Calli Salazar is an abstract artist who started her full time career right here in Grand Rapids. “Grand Rapids really inspired me to take the risk to take my art to the next level. Events such as this one continue to give local artists a place to showcase their work, and to be proud of the community they are a part of.”

During the course of the evening, the art on the walls will change multiple times for maximum impact. In the spirit of collaboration, there will also be a featured community art piece that all attendees are encouraged to interact with and leave their mark on. There will be multiple business card drawings for gift cards, artwork and more. In addition to a cash bar, permanent jewelry vendors and more, DJ Super Dre will be spinning a female artist-centric playlist. Whether it’s a new connection, piece of art, or idea, every attendee will take something home.

Ladies’ Night is a way to engage, educate and excite its attendees about the future and potential of women in the Grand Rapids arts and culture scene, to meet collaborators and build a network, and to pursue their career in Grand Rapids. Elle Lively says “There is a need in our community for female forward events that cater to young professional females in the arts practices. There are very few female focused events that directly relate to the passions we have made our profession.” She believes that creating smarter events for women to network will create strong connections resulting in collaboration and new ideas. In August 2022, she tested this idea with a private invite only event that required no marketing, prep, or fiscal obligation. Over 30 women attended the invite only event and made lasting connections that have produced even more collaboration. For example, two of those women have now started a business together.

This event is open to the public and no private invite is required. CTC and AAW have partnered with Girls Rock Grand Rapids to collect a $5 suggested donation at the door to benefit their programming. Additionally, AAW has generously agreed to donate 10% of any art sold during the event time frame to Girls Rock Grand Rapids.

The $5 suggested donation gets you access to:
● A rotating art show featuring female and non-binary artists, curated by artist at large, Calli Salazar
● Beats from live female DJ
● Cash bar from Beer City Bread Co.
● Opportunity to be part of a collaborative art piece at the event
● Business card raffle with gift cards, art from Calli Salazar, and more from local female owned businesses
& more surprises!

About Elle Lively of Crooked Tree Creative (co-presenter, event series founder):
Crooked Tree Creative is a local boutique artist development company focused on improving the quality of life in our communities by empowering artists with hands-on skills, tools, and collaboration opportunities. In the past 5 years, founder Elle Lively has coached hundreds of artists, started a related nonprofit, and produced dozens of events. Elle’s goal is to continue collaboration efforts as the sole driving force of this company. You’ll see several productions from CTC this year, but this series is something distinctly different.

About All Art Works (co-presenter, venue):
AllArtWorks is a platform created to connect art with homes. They are a juried platform that carefully vets quality and price. Through their long-standing relationships with multiple NYC galleries and private dealers we represent secondary market work by such renowned artists as Arthur Dove, Robert DeNiro Sr., Fairfield Porter, Philip Pearlstein and many others. Learn more at www.allartworks.com.

About Girls Rock Grand Rapids (nonprofit partner):
Girls Rock! Grand Rapids (GR!GR) is a week-long summer camp that exists to empower girls and gender-expansive youth through music. Each year, kids and teens at camp get to participate in instrument exploration, workshops, band forming, song writing, and logo and album art creation. They also get to record their new songs in a professional recording studio and then perform them live in front of an audience. It seriously rocks. OCRC Reminds Motorists to be Safe, Alert This Winter Season

Ottawa County Road Commission crews are working hard to help keep area roadways clear during our first major snow event of the 2022-23 winter maintenance season.

As our crews begin to share the road with area drivers, the OCRC is offering up some tips and information on winter operations, from plowing priorities to snow plow safety.

Plowing Priorities

Winter maintenance operations are conducted in accordance with the established priority system based on traffic volumes, road classification, and location.

The priorities are as follows:

1 – State Trunklines (i.e. I-96, I-196, US-31, M-45)
2 – Multi-lane Primary Roads
3 – Primary Roads
4 – Local Paved Roads
5 – Subdivision Streets
6 – Local Gravel Roads
7 – Dead End Streets and Cul-de-sacs

Tips For Driving

plow

Do not attempt to pass snow plow vehicles while they are plowing. Never attempt to pass a snow plow on the right.

Do not crowd the plow! Plow drivers have limited visibility and they cannot see directly behind their trucks. Please be aware that snow plow trucks may back up at intersections.

Be sure your windshield is clear of ice and snow. Make sure washer fluids are full, tires have proper air pressure and tread, and your vehicle is equipped with essential emergency equipment.

Posted speeds are for ideal road conditions. Michigan law requires motorists to drive at a “careful and prudent speed” in all conditions. Reduce speeds and increase following distances. Accelerate and brake slowly and avoid over-steering.

Beware of ice patches. Bridges and overpasses freeze first.

Avoid distractions. Don’t talk on your cell or text.

Always wear your safety belt. Ensure that all passengers are properly buckled, and children are in appropriate child-restraints.

Keep Away from the Road

Our plow drivers often deal with low visibility during winter weather events. Snow is constantly flying onto the windshield and around the plow truck. These conditions make it a challenge for our drivers to see anyone along the road — both children playing and homeowners shoveling or blowing snow on their driveways.

Just because you can see or hear the plow truck doesn’t mean the driver can see you! Make sure your far enough off of the road and away from the truck when it is operating in your vicinity.

Plows can throw large chunks of ice into ditches when plowing, these chunks of snow and ice could cause you to become injured.

Make sure you remind your children that it is never a good idea to tunnel into snow or build forts in the snowbanks along the side of the road. Our drivers will not be able to see you, and if you’re in the tunnel, you could be “snowed in” when a truck plows next to you.

This scholarship program honors the legacy of LMCU founder and teacher, Lloyd F. Hutt, and his lifelong commitment to education and community involvement.

A Thought for Today

by Connie Jarka

Leaves swish as I walk
Through the unraked thought,
The time changes to thoughts of snow;
Candle in the window
Sweatshirt to thin now,
Heavy coat out next to boots ready to go.

Annual Holiday Meal Set for December 15th

seniors

Muskegon, Mich. – It’s that time of year when families begin to gather, memories from the past are shared, and hopes for the New Year fill the air. For over a decade, AgeWell Services of West Michigan have partnered with the DTE Energy Foundation and Senior Resources of West Michigan to bring special holiday meals to those 60 and over in Oceana, Muskegon, and Ottawa counties.

“We are grateful for the continued support from the DTE Energy Foundation and Senior Resources of West Michigan to provide this special meal to our aging neighbors,” said Kris Collee, Executive Director of AgeWell Services. “Their support allows us to provide a little extra joy in people’s lives, especially for some who may have a hard time during the Holidays.”

This year the annual meal is Thursday, December 15 at nine locations around Muskegon and Ottawa counties. Meals will be offered as dine-in but a few to-go meals will be available at each site.

This year’s menu is cranberry brie stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes and gravy, chunky applesauce with cinnamon, Prince Charles veggies, dinner roll with butter, and dessert.

For more information, call 211 or visit agewellservices.org/dte-energy-holiday-meal.

A Thought for Today

by Connie Jarka

As we praise our Veterans
And remember and honor them as well;
We have no idea the stories
they all may have to tell.

We accept this God-given country
They have tried to leave;
We will think of them all today
And pray their souls to keep.

Thank you, we say
for all you have done;
May your efforts and lives given
be remembered;
We will try to take care of the country
you have sacrificed for,
This Veterans Day on the 11th of November.
God Bless You!!!!!

A Home for the Holidays: Ottawa Celebrates Adoption Day

Courts host Adoption Day Celebration on November 22

The holiday to give thanks is upon us and the importance of family is top of mind. Families come together in many of ways, one of which, is adoption. Recognized nationally since 1995 and statewide since 2002, November is Adoption Month. Locally, the 20th Circuit and Ottawa County Probate Courts celebrate Adoption Day alongside the Michigan Supreme Court on the Tuesday prior to Thanksgiving. To honor this tradition, the Court will host its twentieth event in hopes it will inspire some to open their hearts and homes to consider foster care and adoption.

With great joy, the Court will kick off what is warmly known as the “happiest day at the court” with a brief ceremony on Tuesday, November 22 at 9:00am. Confirmation hearings presided by Chief Probate Court Judge, Mark A. Feyen and Family Division Judge, Kent D. Engle, will follow. All events will take place at the Fillmore Complex in West Olive.

Please join us in celebrating the families who choose to open their hearts to these children and provide them with their forever home.

Local and State Adoption Facts:

  • In fiscal year 2022, more than 1,600 Michigan children were adopted through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services or private agencies.
  • At any given time, there are approximately 10,300 children in Michigan’s foster care system and of those, nearly 250 children are in need of a forever family through adoption.
  • Typically, adoptions are finalized in private, but on Adoption Day, more than 30 courts statewide are expected to host events, to raise awareness and to inspire more families to think about adoption.
  • People can adopt whether they are single or married. They do not have to be wealthy or own their own home but must have adequate financial resources to provide for a family.
  • Children in the foster care system become eligible for adoption following termination of parental rights due to abuse or neglect. The goal for most children in the foster care system is reunification with their families.
  • There is support for families who want to adopt. In fact, approximately 95 percent of children who are available for adoption qualify for assistance to help families with some of the costs of bringing children into their homes.
  • More information is available at the Michigan Adoption Resource Exchange website:  https://www.mare.org/.

Notre Dame Professor to Speak About the Future of Rechargeable Batteries

poster

On Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. Muskegon Community College (MCC) will host a free, public lecture regarding the role of batteries in vehicles and our renewable energy future. Associate Professor Dr. Jennifer Schaefer from the University of Notre Dame will present “Advanced Rechargeable Batteries for Energy Storage” in Room 1300 at the MCC Stevenson Center located at 221 South Quarterline Road in Muskegon.

Schaefer is an expert in renewable energy from the Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering and also serves as the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Notre Dame University. She will provide an overview of the role of batteries in a renewable energy future, the material chemistry of current commercialized Li-ion batteries, and the design considerations for future generation battery design to meet our global energy needs.

While the cost of the generation of renewable electricity has plummeted, storage and use of that electricity at a large scale presents substantial technical challenges. Rechargeable batteries are believed to be a scalable solution for the storage of intermittently generated electricity (from solar or wind) that cannot be immediately used. Rechargeable batteries are also a means for vehicle electrification to reduce our dependence on liquid fuels for transportation.

Dr. Andrew Wible, director of the MCC lecture series said, “From automobiles to solar panels, we need good batteries. I am fascinated to find out what the future of battery technology holds and invite others to join us!”

Muskegon Community College offers 54 associate degree programs and 32 certificate programs in Muskegon, Newaygo, and Ottawa counties. Located on a 100-acre scenic campus, MCC is consistently recognized as one of the top community colleges in the state of Michigan.

Progressive Women Urge People of All Political Stripes To Reject Extreme Proposal 3

submitted by Christen Pollo, Spokeswoman – Citizens to Support MI Women and Children

speaker
A member of the Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising speaks at the Michigan State Capitol against Proposal 3 during a press conference on Thursday, October 13, 2022.

A group of progressive and left-leaning women said that Proposal 3 is too extreme because it would endanger the health and safety of vulnerable women and children by deregulating the abortion industry and should be rejected by Michigan voters this November.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re pro-choice or pro-life. This is about keeping women safe, and making sure that they are not put in unsafe situations when faced with an unplanned pregnancy,” said Kristen Day, executive director of the national organization Democrats For Life.

The slate of speakers at the Michigan State Capitol steps on October 13, 2022, consistently called out supporters of Proposal 3 for falsely portraying the proposal as restoring Roe or keeping the status quo, when in fact the amendment would go far beyond that.

“Despite the slick marketing attempts to make Proposal 3 sound like it’s keeping the status quo, the reality is the wording of this proposed constitutional amendment would give the abortion industry free rein to self-regulate far beyond what Roe ever established,” said Sarah Burchart, the state chapter leader of Democrats for Life of Michigan.

The text of the proposed constitutional amendment creates a “fundamental right” to reproductive rights that includes abortion, which cannot be regulated by the state if the woman’s “autonomous decision-making” is infringed upon. Legal experts have said this language would invalidate existing health and safety laws implemented on abortion clinics and bar the Legislature from trying to enact regulations on abortion in the future.

Kristen Day, executive director of Democrats For Life of America, speaks at the Michigan State Capitol against Proposal 3 during a press conference on October 13, 2022.

Burchart said if Proposal 3 passes, bad actors in the abortion industry would be able to continue to operate without accountability because they could claim protection under the amendment language that stipulates that the state cannot “penalize, prosecute, or otherwise take adverse action against someone for aiding or assisting a pregnant individual in exercising their right to reproductive freedom.”

“Some Prop 3 advocates have tried to claim that nobody would ever use their language in this way. But the only assurance I’ve gotten is maybe the courts will sort it out later. Would we accept this answer from any other kind of industry, like tobacco companies? If we wouldn’t assume self-regulation for tobacco companies or big oil, we shouldn’t accept it for the abortion industry bankrolling this proposal either,” Burchart said.

Monica Galloway, former Flint Councilwoman and president of the Michigan Municipal League, noted that the amendment would take away the right for parents to be informed if their daughter is seeking an abortion, due to how the amendment extends the fundamental right to abortion to children and blocks any restrictions on it if the restriction infringed on the person’s autonomous decision-making.

“I am asking parents to take a serious look at what this says…if Prop 3 does pass, women in this state will be travailing and wailing over the fact that they have given up their parental rights to help their children,” Galloway said.

The women also made an appeal to Democrats, progressives, and left-leaning people like themselves to look at Proposal 3 and see how dangerous and extreme it is, and how it does not line up with Democratic and progressive ideals.

“There’s nothing progressive about what Prop 3 is proposing, which is to remove all safety regulations for abortion seekers. There’s no progress in that,” said Terrisa Bukovinac, president of the Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising, who described herself as atheist, feminist and leftist.

“This gathering of progressive women show that regardless of how voters feel about the issue of abortion, Proposal 3 is extreme and should be rejected by all Michigan voters,” said Christen Pollo, spokesperson for Citizens to Support MI Women and Children, the official ballot question committee opposed to Proposal 3. “Proposal 3 will make abortion more harmful and dangerous for women, making this truly an anti-woman proposal.”

kimberly
Kimberly Knott Hill speaks at the Michigan State Capitol against Proposal 3 during a press conference on October 13, 2022.

Lucy Moye, national chair of the American Solidarity Party – which carries a pro-life for the whole life platform – emphasized the importance for Michigan voters to go beyond the summary of the proposal that will be found on their ballot and to read the actual constitutional amendment.

“These radical changes had been quietly slipped into the text in such a way that Michigan voters will not see them if they only read the summary of the proposal that appears on the ballot. That’s a really important point. The summary is simple and innocuous. But the text itself, which is what the courts and the lawyers will use, is anything but,” Moye said.

“Proposal three is just wrong for children, it is just wrong for women, and it is just wrong for Michigan,” said Kimberly Hill Knott, a former congressional candidate.

Democrats For Life is a national organization of Democrats who are pro-life for the whole life, and a coalition member of the No on Proposal 3 campaign. Michigan voters are urged to vote no on Proposal 3 on November 8 or beforehand on their absentee ballots.

Waterman Selected as Deputy Ottawa County Administrator

waterman

After wading through a pool of 47 applicants, Ottawa County Administrator John Shay announced today that Patrick Waterman has been selected to serve as the next Deputy County Administrator. Waterman’s contract was approved at the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners meeting on September 27.

“We are thrilled to have Patrick join the Ottawa County Team,” said Shay. “His many years in city management, community development and municipal planning will serve the residents well.”

Waterman has been a resident and public servant of Ottawa County for over twenty years. He and his family currently reside in the City of Hudsonville where he has served as City Manager since 2010. During his time there, Waterman led the city’s efforts to revitalize their downtown and expand pedestrian connectivity. He was instrumental in the completion of several economic development and quality of life enhancement projects. Prior to Hudsonville, Waterman served as the Community Development Director for Grand Haven Charter Township for eight years. He also has over a decade of private sector experience, having worked for various municipal planning and engineering consulting firms in Michigan.

Waterman received his Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning from Michigan State University, and Master of Public Administration from Grand Valley State University. He is a certified professional planner with the American Institute of Certified Planners.

“I am very excited to begin this next chapter of my career,” said Waterman. “I have a tremendous amount of admiration and respect for Ottawa County. Their reputation as a model of efficiency, collaboration, and innovation is recognized statewide, traits that can only be attributed to the county’s exceptional leadership and capable team of dedicated employees.

It has been a tremendous honor and privilege to serve the wonderful community of Hudsonville these past twelve years. I now look forward to the opportunity to take on new challenges and serve at the county level.”

Patrick Waterman will fill the position vacated when John Shay was promoted to County Administrator in March of 2022. The Deputy County Administrator position pays $158,000 per year and Waterman will take his post on November 21.

Temporary Shoreline Drive Lane Closures Begin October 3rd

MUSKEGON, MI – The first phase of the “road diet” study by the City of Muskegon on Shoreline Drive is scheduled to roll out this fall, starting the week of Oct. 3.

map

With the goal of informing potential uses along this corridor — including increased walkability, bicycling and other pedestrian amenities and recreational opportunities — the first phase of the pilot project will reduce lanes for approximately six weeks on the four-lane US-31 Business Route (Shoreline Drive) through the city’s downtown waterfront. A single lane of Shoreline Drive will be closed in each direction between Seventh Street and Terrace Street so that routine road maintenance can be conducted on Shoreline Drive.

With a “road diet,” city officials are hopeful that slower traffic speeds and fewer vehicular accidents will make this roadway safer and easier to cross from the historic downtown to the waterfront.

After City of Muskegon Department of Public Works’ crews complete half of the concrete pavement repairs, the lane closures will switch to the other two lanes the week of Oct. 17. All of the lane closures and maintenance work on Shoreline Drive through the downtown should be completed by the week of Nov. 14. Engineers will use this routine maintenance closure to collect preliminary data on the road diet and have those results to the city commission and community by the end of the year.

Phase two of the “road diet” study is tentatively planned for spring/summer of 2023 – but still needs commission approval. This timeframe will allow for higher traffic volumes that come with tourism and lakeshore events, according to Public Works Director Leo Evans. Traffic control devices such as traffic cones, pavement markings, barriers and planters will temporarily eliminate one lane in each direction. The public space created by the lane reductions will be tested for bicycle use, landscaped plantings, public art and community gathering areas.

The cost of the project is approximately $100,000 and has been partially approved by the Muskegon City Commission. With the observations and data from the two test periods, the city’s consultant Progressive AE will provide results and recommendations to city officials in the second half of 2023.

Any permanent reconfiguration of Shoreline Drive will require approval through the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and could be a lengthy process of public input, design, funding and construction. The city will conduct public forums to seek community input on any proposed changes to Shoreline Drive. A study preview event on July 25 was well attended.

The public can track the Shoreline Drive study at: https://www.muskegon-mi.gov/departments/planning/shoreline-drive-pilot-project/
