Muskegon Polish Festival Brings Cultural Celebration to Hackley Park Over Labor Day Weekend

Muskegon, MI – The 9th annual Muskegon Polish Festival returns to Hackley Park August 30-31 with live music, polka dancing, Polish food, and merchandise.

Held annually over Labor Day weekend, Muskegon Polish Festival highlights Polish culture through traditions, education, music, and cuisine. The festival hours are 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, August 30-31, in downtown Muskegon’s Hackley Park, 350 W. Webster Ave. Admission is $10 for ages 21 and older; under 21 get in free. Enjoy Polish vendors, food, drinks, kids’ activities, music and more.

The festival started as a way to pass along Polish heritage to future generations to preserve as well as share Polish culture with the larger community. This lively, inclusive gathering is a celebration of cherished traditions and culture of the Polish community.

“We’re excited to continue our mission of promoting and celebrating Polish heritage within our community,” said Donna Piasecki, President of the Muskegon Polish Festival. “This year, festival-goers can look forward to unique experiences like dancing the polka on our custom-built wooden dance floor, tasting authentic Polish food, and discovering handcrafted pottery and jewelry. Our popular Polish beers will be served again, and we’ll be debuting our new vodka bar in collaboration with Wonderland Distilling Company.”

Events and activities include:
● Live music and polka dancing from 12-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday
● Food vendors serving authentic Polish cuisine, desserts, beer and more
● Polish merchandise and handcrafted art and jewelry
● Live cooking demonstrations by Anna Hurning from the Polish food blog, Polish Your Kitchen
● Encampment of the Swordsmanship Museum and Academy featuring costumed reenactors and Renaissance-style swords of the Polish Military, the Hussars
● History tent highlighting Muskegon’s local Polish culture with authentic clothing, historical artifacts, and stories of those who helped shape Muskegon

In addition, the festival’s 2024 big raffle is a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4-door hardtop. All sales end at 8 p.m. on Aug. 31. One winning ticket will be drawn between 8:15-8:30 p.m. Aug. 31. Winner need not be present. Tickets available online at www.muskegonpolishfest.com/2024-jeep-raffle.

Michigan Maritime Museum Set For A R3PEAT with This Years “Rock the Boat” Concert

South Haven, MI – Celebration of the Michigan Maritime Museum’s 50th anniversary continues with the highly anticipated Rock the Boat “R3PEAT” concert, scheduled for August 23rd from 6:30 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. With the new expansion of the Museum’s boardwalk, this year’s event offers even more space to rock the docks and jam to some sick beats. With music, food, and wicked good times, Rock the Boat is the raddest fundraiser of the season.

Back by popular demand, The 1985 Band returns to the Museum for another night of bodacious 80’s hits. Dust off those leg warmers and tease up your hair as you jam to some of the greatest hits the 80s have to offer while enjoying a dazzling light show during this immersive, musical experience. Wood, Stock, and Grill food truck returns to offer guests some delectable food for purchase, and a cash bar will provide guests with beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages.

“After the success of the previous two Rock the Boat fundraisers and continuously selling out, we are so thrilled to be able to bring this popular event back for a three-peat,” said Patti Montgomery-Reinert, Executive Director. “With this being a year of celebrations, I can’t think of a better way to round out our 50th summer season.”

There are several ticket options available for attendees. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy the view front and center from the event grounds. Event grounds tickets are $20 with kids 4 and under being free. OR enjoy the luxury of one of our VIP packages. Dance the planks away and enjoy the killer harbor views from one of our Dockside High Tops or new this year, revel in the excitement of Rock the Boat from the luxury of your boat with one of our VIP Dock Spaces! These VIP packages include a stand-up table with seating for four people, 8 drink tickets, a group photo with the band, and some rad concert swag.

Don’t miss the boat! Tickets and VIP packages are limited. To secure your tickets or for more information visit www.michiganmaritimemuseum.org/rock-the-boat.

Public Comment Period Scheduled at the MPO Policy Committee Meeting: August 21, 2024 at 1:30 pm

A public comment period is scheduled at the MPO Policy Committee Meeting on August 21, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. The meeting is being held at the office of the West Michigan Shoreline Regional Development Commission (WMSRDC), 316 Morris Avenue, Suite 340, Muskegon, Michigan. Meeting materials are available on the event calendar at www.wmsrdc.org.

The Muskegon and Northern Ottawa County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), which is responsible for transportation planning in the Muskegon and Northern Ottawa County area, is seeking public comment on the transportation planning process. The planning process includes the 2050 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP), Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Program of Projects (POP), the Fiscal Year 2023 – 2026 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), and other agenda items.

The TIP is developed in a cooperative effort between federal, state, and local officials and serves as the final link in the transportation planning process. The primary purpose of the TIP is to identify transportation programs and projects to be funded with federal aid in accordance with federal law and regulations. This TIP is an outline of the transportation needs of Muskegon County and Northern Ottawa County through 2026. The LRTP looks at MPO’s future transportation network with the intention of being used as a guideline for transportation investment. The FTA POP includes 5307 and 5308 funding categories for the Muskegon Area Transit System (MATS) and Harbor Transit. Recommendations for new construction, safety improvements, congestion (traffic) management, air quality, non-motorized, transit, planning, etc. will be accepted.

Symptoms of illness include fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. Because there is no vaccine or cure for West Nile virus, preventing infection is important.

You can reduce your risk of getting sick with West Nile virus by avoiding mosquito bites. Prevent mosquito bites by:

Using insect repellent when you are outside.
Wearing light colored and long-sleeved shirts and pants.
Treating clothing and outdoor gear with insect repellent.
Taking steps to control mosquitos in your yard by removing standing water around your home. This can include water in bird baths, children’s wading pools, water bowls for your pets, or in any container that can collect water.

Spotlight on Performers – White Lake Chamber Music Festival: Meet Cellist Marina Hoover and Violist Richard Young

The annual White Lake Chamber Music Festival, now in its 15th year of presenting an impressive array of exceptional performances and live chamber music performances, will run from August 2 – 10. Excellent programming, world-class artists, and inspiring classical music performances will take place in the White Lake area. What once was mostly found only in metropolitan cities, is now a yearly experience in the White Lake area.

This year, a core group of musicians were engaged that will perform throughout the entirety of the 9 days. Two mainstays of the Festival are returning musicians – Marina Hoover, cello, and Richard Young, viola.

Cellist Marina Hoover has double duty this year. Being the new Artistic Director, she has created the programming and secured the 18 musicians, plus being a trusted source for Director Sondra Cross for “all things musical”! Ms. Hoover is a two-time Grammy nominee and the founding cellist of the St. Lawrence String Quartet, which rocketed to international prominence. In her 13 years with the St. Lawrence, Ms. Hoover performed at The White House, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 92nd Street “Y,” The Kennedy Center (for the Emperor of Japan), Wigmore Hall (London), Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), and Theatre De Ville (Paris). Following her time with the SLSQ, Ms. Hoover held the position of Visiting Professor of Cello at the University of Toronto, Artist-in-residence at the Banff School of Fine Arts, and Distinguished Artist at the University of Alberta. As the Festival’s new Artistic Director, Ms. Hoover will take the festival to new heights with her exceptional background, experience, and passion for great chamber music!

Violist Richard Young was invited to perform for Queen Elisabeth of Belgium at the Royal Palace in Brussels at the age of only 13! He has been a soloist with various orchestras and has given solo and chamber music recitals throughout North and South America, Europe, the Far East, Africa, and Australia. A special award winner in the Rockefeller Foundation American Music Competition, he was a member of the New Hungarian Quartet as well as the renowned Vermeer String Quartet. Recording artist, producer, and author, Mr. Young has performed at many prestigious festivals throughout the world, received three Grammy nominations, taught at Northern Illinois University, the University of Michigan, Northwestern University, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Bogota, Colombia), Wichita State University, North Park University, and Oberlin Conservatory.

This year’s nine-day festival is packed with so many exciting offerings: no cost daily 4PM Salon Concerts at the Book Nook & Java Shop, a children’s concert, a children’s recital, meet and greets, a “Cabaret Night”. There will once again be the world’s greatest music wonderfully played, combined with the soft summer weather, beaches, and spectacular sunsets. All of this makes the White Lake Chamber Music Festival a vacation destination for an ever-growing audience from near and far.

For a schedule of this year’s delightful Festival events, please visit White Lake Chamber Music Society.

Wednesday Night Market & Free Concerts This Summer In Downtown St. Joe

St. Joe, MI—St. Joe Today is excited to announce the return of both the Wednesday Brown Bag Concert Series and the Friday Night Concert Series. Both series will showcase regional musicians for a free hour-long concert each week in one of the most scenic venues along Lake Michigan’s shore. Performances will take place at the John E.N. Howard Bandshell on Port Street which offers concertgoers a beautiful view of the St. Joseph River, Lake Michigan, and downtown St. Joe.

“The bandshell is such an incredible venue to enjoy live music!” said Paul Knapp, executive director of St. Joe Today. “We hope you’ll join us throughout the summer as we continue to highlight the best St. Joe has to offer.”

The Wednesday Brown Bag Concert Series offers lunchtime entertainment from 12:00p-1:00p each week, July 17-August 28. Knapp said concertgoers can bring in brown bag lunches or get take-out food from a variety of restaurants in the adjacent downtown.

This year’s lineup includes:

July 17 – Tim Velez (Classic Rock & Country)
July 24 – Mike Talbot (American Hits)
July 31 – Richard Schwartz (50’s, 60’s, 70’s Oldies)

This weekly market will be held on Wednesdays, July 17 through August 28 from 4:00p-8:00p in Court Place Plaza (across from Silver Harbor Brewing) and will feature a mix of artisans and their handcrafted goods + farmers and their food/beverages plus enjoy live music from 5:00p-8:00p. For more information visit, stjoetoday.com/nightmarket. Sponsored by Silver Harbor Brewing.

The Friday Night Concert Series offers a great opportunity to unwind and kick off the weekend from 7:00p-8:00p each week, July 19-August 30. Sponsored by The Boulevard Inn & Bistro.

This year’s lineup includes:

July 19 – Blue Shoes (Big Band Style)

“These concerts are a great cornerstone to your evening in St. Joe or just a nice break from your busy day,” said Knapp. “The bandshell is walking distance from the beach, ice cream, shopping, restaurants, and sits nicely within St. Joe’s Social District. Dr. Universe: Why did people stop exploring the ocean? I heard they only explored 5% of it. – Dakota, 11, New Mexico

When I think about exploring the ocean, I think about the discovery of giant tube worms. They live in super- hot, mineral-rich water deep in the ocean. They don’t do normal things like eat or poop—but they can live for 300 years or longer. Scientists were shocked when they found them—and there’s probably much more to find.
The worms are long, white tubes with a dark red plume coming out of the end.

These are tube worms that live by underwater volcanoes near the Galapagos Islands. The feathery red part is like a gill. It’s filled with blood. It absorbs chemicals from the water and the volcano vent. Image: NOAA

I talked about ocean exploration with my friend Gretchen Rollwagen-Bollens. She’s a biological oceanographer and plankton ecologist at Washington State University.

She told me that you’re right that we’ve only explored about 5% of the ocean. But it isn’t because we stopped trying. The ocean is just massive.

The ocean contains more than 321 million cubic miles of water. To imagine that, think of something that’s about a mile away from you. You might need to use a map app. Or ask a grownup for a landmark.

Now picture a giant 3D cube that same distance on each side. It’s 1 mile long, 1 mile wide and 1 mile deep. You would need 321 million of those to equal the ocean. Or think of a 1-gallon milk jug. All the water in the ocean would fill about 325 quintillion jugs.

When scientists say we haven’t explored much of the ocean, they don’t mean just the bottom of the ocean. They mean all that water between the bottom and the surface, too. That’s called the water column(). It’s the biggest habitat on the planet.

Rollwagen-Bollens told me that exploring every bit of the water column would be tough. There aren’t really landmarks there. It all pretty much looks like water. Plus, once you get deeper than the sun can reach, it’s completely dark.

Artist rendition of the water column which is divided into five zones from the surface to the seafloor. Each zone varies in pressure, light, temperature, oxygen, nutrients, and biological diversity
Image: Barbara Ambrose/NOAA

The water column is divided into zones. Each zone is different in terms of temperature, amount of light and oxygen, and what lives there.

“Visiting every place in the ocean wouldn’t help us learn much,” Rollwagen-Bollens said. “The organisms and features of the deep ocean are distributed broadly. So, it makes more sense to be targeted.”

That’s why scientists explore the ocean using sonar from boats or satellites in space. They send sound waves into the ocean to make a picture of what’s underwater. When they see something interesting, they can send a remote-controlled vehicle. Or they can climb inside a submersible like the Alvin to visit in person.

Those vehicles have cameras and robotic arms for taking measurements and samples. Scientists can even take water samples and use the little bits of environmental DNA in there to figure out what living things have been in that water.

Even though we’ve visited only about 5% of the ocean, we know a lot about the ocean floor. Scientists have used satellite data to roughly map the whole thing. They’ve also made detailed maps of about 26% of the ocean floor. That’s done using high-tech gear mounted on ships—like multibeam sonar. They plan to map the entire ocean floor in detail by 2030.

That will help us understand what life is like on the ocean floor—and in the water column, too. Scientists think there could be a million species in the ocean. But we’ve probably only met about one-third of them so far.

That’s a lot of species we don’t know yet. By choosing the best places to explore, I’m sure we’ll worm our way into meeting some of them.

Sincerely,

Dr. Universe

First Rabies-positive Bat in 2024 Identified in Ottawa County

If you find a bat in your home, check it out before you let it out!

(HOLLAND, MI.) – The Ottawa County Department of Public Health (OCDPH) has been notified by the Michigan Bureau of Laboratories (BOL) that a bat recently submitted from Ottawa County has tested positive for rabies. This is the first case of rabies in an animal in the county this year. There were no reported cases of rabies in animals or humans in 2023. As of July 12, 2024, there have been 18 reported cases of animals with rabies in the state of Michigan. The risk of exposure to a rabid bat is higher from May through September when bats are more active. Residents should take steps to protect their families and animals from rabies.

People and pets are usually exposed to rabies when they are bitten or scratched by an infected animal. Of particular concern are exposures that occur when a bat is found in a room with people who have been asleep, or a bat is found with an unattended child or impaired adult who cannot be sure of their contact with the bat.

Rabies is a fatal, but preventable disease. Because of this, it is important to collect the bat for rabies testing. Post-exposure treatment is recommended for people who are exposed to a potentially rabid animal. Treatment is not necessary if the animal tests negative for rabies.

Protect your family and pets from rabies by taking these simple steps:

Avoid contact with bats and other wild animals. Do not keep wild animals as pets and do not try to rehabilitate wild animals yourself. Wild animals can carry rabies without looking sick.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, seek immediate medical attention.

If you find a bat in your home, do not release or dispose of it. Safely confine or collect the bat if possible and contact the OCDPH at 616-396-5266 to determine if it should be tested for rabies. If testing is needed, animals may be brought to Harbor Humane Society (616-399-2119 or harborhumane.org) to be sent for testing. More information on how to collect a bat safely can be found here or in this YouTube video.

Protect your pets by getting them vaccinated against rabies. Even cats that live indoors and never go outside can encounter a bat that gets inside the home.

If your animal is bitten or scratched by a wild animal, or if you believe they have had unsupervised contact with wildlife, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. Even if your pet is currently vaccinated against rabies, additional actions may need to be taken to prevent them from becoming infected. If possible, safely confine or capture the wild animal without touching it and contact your local animal control officer or veterinarian, as the animal may need to be tested for rabies.

Dr. Universe: Why do people like cute animals more than ugly ones? – Brayden, 9, Ohio

Dear Brayden,

Not to brag, but when I was a kitten, humans would see me and squeal. Maybe it was my big, sparkly eyes or my teeny, fluffy paws.

I asked my friend Giuseppe Giannotti why people found me so adorable. He’s a scientist at Washington State University. He studies the brain.

He told me that humans like cute animals because they remind them of babies.

“We’re drawn to find traits in animals that are similar to what we think is cute in humans,” Giannotti said. “The cutest things in humans are babies—you know, big heads, giant eyes, soft cheeks—and we project this to everything around us.”

The idea is called baby schema. Seeing a baby makes us pay attention. It switches on our instinct to take care of something. That’s one way nature makes sure that babies get what they need—even though they’re often loud and stinky and need help all the time.

It works because your brain has a built-in reward system.

Let’s say you eat some delicious chocolate. Your brain starts pumping out a chemical message called dopamine. That message travels to another part of your brain. It sticks to the brain cells there. It gives you a rush of happy feelings. Then another part of your brain connects that happy feeling with the chocolate you ate. Now, the next time you see chocolate, you remember how good you felt. You’re more likely to eat it again.

The same thing happens when you see something cute—like a baby or an adorable kitten.

“Things that are cute drive the same neuronal circuits of reward,” Giannotti said. “Cute things can quickly increase activity in specific brain regions with the release of dopamine. That gives us pleasure associated with something that’s cute.”

That happy feeling is a reward our brain gives us for noticing the cute thing and wanting to take care of it.

Humans aren’t the only animals with a reward system like that. Dopamine is one of the oldest chemical messages we know about. Lots of animals have evolved similar ways to make sure they do important things—like eat or take care of their babies.

But what about the ugly animals?

All animals are related to each other. But scientists say it’s harder for people to connect with animals that are far from humans on the family tree. Looking into the face of a chimpanzee just doesn’t feel the same as looking at the face of a tick—not even a squirmy baby tick.

Maybe that’s why it’s harder to get people excited about protecting animals that seem unfamiliar or less cute—like insects—even though they do important jobs.

Giannotti said the quick jolt of happiness from seeing something cute is good for people. Watching adorable animals in real life or on videos makes you feel better.

Maybe add in a few videos of less familiar animals. It could expand your idea of who’s cute.()

Even if they’re not as adorably floofy as baby me.

Sincerely,

Dr. Universe
